I recently bought a GTC and after Christmas took a trip to Devon - on the trip back home the car is very nearly run in with 600 miles on the clock. So I give it a bit of a boot, on the A331 near the M3.

Yikes! Large Police Volvo appears out of nowhere right up my rear - I obviously slow down (not braking) and he comes alongside me at about 80. The officer in the passenger seat looks at the car, smiles, nods at me and drives off. Phew! I really worried that my clean license was about to get it's first point.

Further up the road there's a white van pulling a trailer full of fence panels - he's all over the road, the fence panels slewing wildly from side to side in the trailer (look like they're about to fall out). The Police car is now right behind him and he's about to get pulled.

Strikes me that this was proper Police work (I would say that, because I wasn't pulled over), however had I been, the van might have caused an accident....

It's a figure of speech, not to be taken seriously or literally, like "speed kills", "honest politician" and "congestion charge"

'Came from nowhere' is, I thought, a well known expression (assuming English is your first language). I would imagine they came from a Police Station originally. Hope that helps....

I used it to mean that the car was not there the last time I looked.
