I've seen old farts like that shunting there way out of parking spaces - when your front and rear clams cost 3k to replace each, you want people like this off the road.
Yep, he's becoming one of 'em! Had similar situation myself about 15 years ago.
Hence, don't want another!
Tactfully, we approached him some months ago about his driving & he reckons people aren't parking properly....yeh, right!!!!
Worse, we can't stand too close to the
as he starting to smell worse than a bloody pigsty.
Suppose we will have to get some video footage on the mobile fone & visit the local cop shop with it. Bloody annoying the
out of us round here Why can't he gracefully "retire" from driving?
There was a similar oldie a few years ago in my home town. Every day would drive the 2.5 miles from her home to get a paper, but her idea of parking was to stop in the middle of the road, leave the engine running and go into the newsagents. (usually leaving the car door open too!) Local folks were use to her, she'd done it for years and people knew how to keep out of her way, she was always polite and a well loved character in the town.
Needless to say, after a scrape too often, the authorities had to get involved and DVLA took her licence away.
Due to a non existant public transport system, her 'freedom' was taken away from her, she was hardly seen out in public again and a short while later she died at home, alone.
Hopefully when we all get to this age, we'll be allowed to keep driving too.!

Presumably though .. he exchanged insurance details und the people got their cars fixed?
My beauty was hit by thug in chavmobile who runned away.. leaving me with whopping bill.. und someone tell me "insurance does not pay up anyway in car park damage as ist "private land"" Have checked my policy und cannot see any clause indicating this.. und will be insisting the car ist mended by dealer und not the place they "recommend" which quoted for work this car does not need to push up price.. telling me they prove to insurers by taking photos .. yet telling me I cannot see these images for myself. Am not that gullible
.. und let us say.. he felt the "scratches"
from a very wild cat on hearing that one .. grrrrr!
Has he son or daughter.. perhaps a tactful word with them...
Und presumably he has to have medical to renew licence every couple of years or so after reaching 70 years? So maybe he may fail the next one.. und be forced to stop at that point. nail_it said:

Well if the old chap is hitting cars so hard they need scrapping, surely this comes down to dangerous driving!
How many cars had to be scrapped? Surely the police are interested -- and how come his Micra has survived the impacts????

Not easy this one for one is proposing to take away the last bit of independence the TOG may have.
But if he is a bad as stated then public duty to do so not only for this sake but the rest of us.
Has he any immediate family one can talk to to drawn their attention to the problem?.
No? Then it, with supporting evidence, should be drawn to the attention of Plod but I doubt they will have the manpower to stake him out to get the evidence to put him before the Court and have licence revoked until test passed.
Looks as if a letter to DVLA will have to be sent with concerns/evidence.
Had something similar with a member of my family who handed his Licence in after I showed him that the cost of the upkeep of a car for the year was more that he would spend on taxis.

Probably time for someone to have a quite word, maybe the Police? After a few scrapes and crunches, many would think about hanging up their driving gloves if it's obvious they are making a habit of it.
It's not just the elderly though. There is a middle aged lady near us who does damage all the time and is very worrying. When we 1st moved here ten years ago, I noticed her and her appalling driving/positioning right away, all at low speed, probably never been above the speed limit ever. Her Toyota had damage to every single panel, repeated damage which never got fixed. Her own garage door is replaced at least once a year as she runs into it regularly. The car spent several months without the rear bumper as it had somehow gotten ripped off. The Toyota was eventually swopped for a Rover 400, which was pristine, but within six months again every panel was dented, scraped, etc. The garage door replaced again, and even the small dwarf wall between front lawn and pavement was removed because it was impossible for her to just turn into her driveway without eroding it bit by bit, double width driveway too. The immediate neighbours never ever park on the road adjacent, they stay on the drive or park around the corner. She then got a new Yaris, and in the 1st few days, it picked up a full length scrape. Appaling, just appaling. Sometimes you will see her coming, and you drive up onto the pavement sharpish and stop dead until she has passed, other locals do this too, and knowing glances are exchanged and heads shaken. WTF are we going to do about Joan?

Thanks for the info but much as we expected. Checked the DVLA website when this started to get more serious last year. Seems, we all have to get a medical certificate @ 70 and free to drive thereafter without further checks of any type.
Son, who lives locally, checks on TOG daily & it's for the son's convenience that he "encourages" his father to keep driving. They row like cat & dog if the son drives him anywhere.
Why?
The TOG accuses the son of being a bad driver
Plus, TOG smells stinks so much these days, the son probably doesn't want him in his car!

Errrr....don't need this to be happening.
One "event" was last year in the local Waitrose carpark. Found TOG in a panic state in his driveway. Told me he had been hit in the carpark but clearly not the truth by his behaviour & rush to hide the car in his garage.
Clearly had driven away from the incident hoping not to have been caught. He's never been there since!
His independence would not be compromised as services are good in this area & local shops. This was the main reason why he moved here some years back.... without a car!
TOG only got the car in 2004 due to his rows with his son's driving......doh!
It'll happen to a lot of us one day.
This just shows the need for continual re-valdation of driving abilities throughout one's lifetime.
I think there is some initiative in which drivers over 65 can have their driving skills up-dated and checked. What a good idea. Do you think they'll mind if I demonstrate a handbrake turn as part of my re-validation?

Wacky racer, please learn to read...

Was it scraped or was it scrapped???
Big difference........
