Best detector for Camera Vans
Discussion
There I was, minding my own business, BELOW the speed limit on the a5something. A road I dont know.
I rounded a 90 degree, unsighted bend. straight after the bend, the limit changed to 30.
Just beyond the 30 sign was a scamera van waiting to collect some tax.
I 'think' I slowed up quickly enough to avoid the ticket. But the sly underhand fcukers may have got me. which would take my points tally to 9.
So, to preserve my license, which detector is best for picking up the vans? Do they work well?
cheers

Not worth forking out for a) It was around a corner, lasers don't travel around corners b) they will be illegal soon, if not illegal already...
Get a GPS device instead

Road Angel just told me they now include mobile sites in their database. Mobile vans use laser so unless you pick up laser scatter when they shoot the guy ahead, they get you in 0.3 of a second.

The best detector for a scamera van is your eyes, I'm afraid.

yup, but I cant see round corners. As another poster said, they get you in under a second.
And no detectors can see round corners or alert you before you've been nabbed either, which was my point entirely.

I wasnt yanking your chain JonRB, and I get the thing about detectors not working round corners, but a database-based system would be better than nothing right?
The GPS systems are the best but they will have you driving on the edge of your seat. No longer will you be on the look-out for brake lights, cyclists, OAPs or children crossing the road; instead you will spend your time. nose pressed against the windscreen, scanning the horizon for a scamera van the GPS has warned you about. I use mine (a co-pilot based system) when I'm travelling unknown roads and it turns me into a nervous wreck

Not quite sure what to make of that MilnerR!!!
do they 'go off' alot? fnarr fnarr.

They list all of the potential sites that vans may be at. Suffice to say that the SCPs like to make sure they have plenty of tax collecting options. Mine goes off (ooerr) with an alarming regularity (double ooerrr). Most of the alarms are false (camera vans may be at that location once a month, or never). It makes driving unknown roads rather wearing....

so which Road Angel should I look at d'ya reckon? I would probably like sat nav as well the Navigator 6000 maybe?
I've used a Bell550 for years, but like has been said detecting laser is usually too late if you don't get the scatter from ahead.
So I recently bought a Talex, which is GPS based and far cheaper than Road Angel, I paid £60 at Aldi. Update fee is about 30 quid for the 1st year, less after that. It warns of all the fixed cam and mobile van locations and states the speed limit, but only continuously warns you to slow if you're above that limit. It has great ratings from other users, but the only drawback is the volume control doesn't go very loud (plenty loud enough for me) but if you like loud music when driving you wont hear the Talex! I give it 10 out of 10 for the price.

I use co-pilot as well but why would it turn you into a nervous wreck? stick to the speed limit - problem solved
