A friend of mine is being targeted by a psycho online. Without going into detail, the stalker believes he has a legitimate grievance (he hasn't) and is using the internet to harrass my friend. He's also now starting to harrass my friend's friends too.

Has anyone else had any experience of this? Has anyone successfully prosecuted someone for this? Have the BiB got any advice or experience of this kind of thing?

Thanks in advance for your help with this. My friend is putting a brave face on it, but it's starting to get to him and it would be good to give him some hope that something can be done about the nutter.

Report it to the Police.
Harassment is a criminal offence for which he can be arrested.Keep whatever evidence you have for the Police to see.

yes I'm wondering if Malicious Comms would also cover this? Don't have any law books to hand...

Bit more detail might help, like how is it harrassment ? is it in irc chat rooms, usenet or messenger ? as u don't have any details it is possible people have been prosecuted for it, but we would never know

if email, abuse@ispcompany works very well, u need the full headers to find the right company

got stalked by a transvesitite who loves purple underwear and stuff, told me a lot about the real me online many years back, so always use other names, complete with real email addresses that are not really me

only give out my name emails to friends...

Must be a Saab, " because the 'girl' in the Tiv is wearing no knickers" - Streaky
I admit that I put two juxtaposed emails together for the purposes of creating the (possible) illusion that the comment in the latter referred to the former and thereby attempt to elicit some humour - S

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, it's a bit more than just emails. The person has created blogs and posted on forums pretending to be my friend, and has recently started posting photos of his other friends too. He finds their websites and links to them as well as taking pictures off them and posting them on his own site. He's also taken to storing IP addresses of people that visit his site. He's been banned from the main forums my friend posts on, but he keeps coming back with new identities, basically following him around online.

My friend has considered going to the Police and the ISP, but is afraid of what might happen if they don't take it seriously, which is why I wanted to know if anyone had come across a successful prosecution.

The ISP will take it seriously and will, in all likleyhood, monitor the traffic he is generating.

At which point, if he is misbehaving, he is screwed.
