So chaps, the bastard thing has finally come upon us.

Anyone know the exact speed 'limits' for the various point penalties?

Mobile phone use now attracts 3 points as well as a fine...ok.

Anything else we should be aware of?

Cheers,
J.

For the speeding fines, I know that for 30 limits it's:

"Upto" 39 (not specifically 35 to 39) - 2 points & £40 fine
40 to 44 - 3 points and £60
and 45+ - 6 points and £100

For 70 limits I think its about:

upto 84 for 2 points/£40, 85-94 for 3 pts/£60 and 95+ for 6pts/£100.

Don't know what they are for the other speed limits.

So yep, 39mph down a busy narrow high street is now safer than 85 on an empty clear motorway. And of course I expect scamera partnerships to lower their thresholds considering that most people who get caught are often caught in the 2 point ranges meaning that the partnerships won't earn as much money if they keep their current thresholds. rolleyes

I wonder whether, in a year's time, a FIA enquiry would reveal the distribution of NIP speeds for a given SCP?

Nope. No one knows. Literally. The act enables the secretary of state to publish a binding table, but he hasn't done so yet. MPs were bamboozled into voting for the unknowable. Great eh?

This part of the act will not come into force for some time yet.

Another part of the act is that pratnerships no longer keep any of the money they raise. It all goes to the treasury, and they have an annual budget set by the gummint.

"Bamboozled"? You mean you think they did it without knowing? No, I think they knew perfectly what they were doing.

Just as the government distances itself from the fallout for so many things now because it gives responsibility to LAs (refuse collection, recycling, local speed limits), with this it's not the MPs it's the minister. So when Mr/Ms MP comes knocking next time and you say, "Why did you set the points thresholds so low?", he/she can say, "Wasn't me, guv".

I presume you mean a FOI enquiry. Perhaps a Freudian Slip ("FIA" : "speed" or simply a surfeit of TLAs? - Streaky

That's both silly and scary. Doesn't anyone THINK about this before they bring in these stupid 'initiatives'!? How can they carry the same penalty?

LOL! Crazy.....
So does this mean 95+ is now not a trip to court, just a 6 pointer?

Oh yes. I do mean bamboozled. When you try to create the table you hit brick wall anomalies. You need a 'safety buffer' between penalty zones (like the ACPO guidelines) so that you can be sure that the higher level offence has been committed. And you have to try and balance the relative supposed increase in danger in different speed limit zones.

Whatever way you draft the table you hit brick walls that MPs would have very likely have found unacceptable - so the filthy stinking government decided to design the legislation enable the non-existent table.

Not from Thames Valley 'Safer Roads' it won't!!!

They have declined to answer an FOI request from the South Bucks paper in High Wycombe about thresholds on the A404/Marlow Hill.

Yep, I was done there by a tallyvan going down hill (10% incline) last October, 36 in 30 Limit. 3 Points (not 2) and a £60 fine. R'soles

I'm sure that you are right, Streaky.

As it is called the "Freedom of Information Act (2005)", I naively thought that it would make sense to use the abbreviation of its capitalised nouns, rather than including a meaningless conjunction whilst dropping the part that indicates that it is law.
Maybe someday I'll learn how this works.

As for potential Freudian slips, there is nothing whatsovever about the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile that one would associate with freedom of information, or freedom of anything else, except the freedom to make sure that Ferrari and Bernie are always looked after.

Cheers.

Yeah. It caused arguments, then it was removed. Take 30 mph:

[presumably prosecutions will continue to start at 35mph, i.e. +10% +2mph)
lower penalty (two points) up to 39mph
middle penalty (three points) from 40-44mph
higher penalty (six points) above 45mph

You've been caught at 45mph - but, you argue, the equipment cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you were travelling above 38.7mph (45 - 2, -10%) - so that's a lower penalty then please.

And but, but, but, pedestrians are almost certain to be killed at 40mph, so how can that be a middle penalty?

See what I mean? Brick walls...
