Insurance renewal on one of cars ist due - und even accounting for allowing the kittens to drive him.. all quotes are higher than previously.

Per a tiny paragraph in one of the tabloids which I flicked through again just as I was placing in recycling box - (Sexpress - last Saturday) - premiums iuncreased by 4% in last three months per AA statistics

The trend ist blamed on

article in last week's paper said:

growing numbers of uninsured drivers und repair costs

I did note sharp variations in repair estimates when getting quotes for my handsome car that "insurance job" seem to inflate the price by yikes amount... He was mended at dealer's surgery at our insistance at fair price und ist now "back to his old self"

But third party, fire und theft for young drivers und for those with penalty points can cost almost £1000. The typical premium seem to be around £800 per the AA who expect this to rise further still.

It seem cost over UK has increased by 6% over the past year per the AA's annual insurance index data.

The rise in premiums comes despite the number of claims decreasing.

AA's Ian Crowder in the paper said:

Although the number of accidents ist going down, the cost of repairing cars ist going up

ranting I was quoted some ridiculous prices by the repairers which we knew the insurers would recommend und try to bully us into using.. for work the car did not actually require ranting They say they take photos for the insurers but when I asked if I could have a set und see the replaced parts (which my car did not need) all went quiet in the snug - und we insisted the car would go under the "local dealer's surgeon's knife" (Ist an excellent job too.. he ist back to normal rotate

The AA's Mr Crowder also added that modern cars have a lot of technology from computers to crumple zones. Personal injury claims increase by 12% each year too. He said

AA's Ian Chowder in the Express last week said:

It ist partly because of the technology that ist protecting people, which means that people are more likely to survive major incidents und suffer serious injuries

But there are more Ks und less SI per the government stats confused und hospital figures backing his statement re the SI ...rolleyes confused

There are estimatedly 20% who regularly drive with no insurance. Most are unlicenced young men or disqaulifieds with drink/drug convictions... per the AA.

This hi tec high cost stuff is rubbish anyway. People think "oh it's got a computer in it" so therefore the replacement parts must cost £ masses.

The reality is the "chips" are cheap enough if you buy the experimenter versions used for development and testing - if you buy the ones that are preprogrammed in high quantities they are peanuts. Things like the fancy display units are actually *cheaper* than dials and clocks. The wiring is cheaper ; rather than have massive wiring circuits you can have low wire count buses. It's just a racket.

This is nothing new depending on who the insurer is and what their marketing policy is at the time you renew.

MY renewal in Oct 2005 went UP about £20 (approx 5%). In Oct 2006 it went DOWN about £20. I have no idea what will happen next year as the parent company is merging its two internet based offspring. It always surprised me that they ran two almost identical companies anyway. If it gets out of hand I will shop around.

When we changed Mrs. LongQ'a car last year we paid 25% more just to talk to someone whose first language was English, who understood a few things about the UK and who properly understood what we needed to do to have 2 cars covered for a short period of time (on separate policies as I recall but they can still be funny about it ...)

About 3 years ago I had a renewal quote from a previous insurer which showed an increase of 20%+. I queried it and asked if they could drop the included European cover, which I doubted I would need, in order to offset the increase. They said no. So I changed. They are quite used to it.

The main risk with any policy is in the event of a claim. Do they treat you the way you expect to be treated. That's the one thing you can never be sure about, even if you have had prior experience of that company. Many things change behind the scenes.

Strange that premiums are set to soar yet again...
I run a Passat Tdi estate - fully comp, max NCB, 6 points on sheet - renewal cost last July £468 with Norwich Union direct.
3 weeks before renewal, bought wife a little runner, insured as 2nd car, with Norwich Union bearing in mind she's always been a named driver - 0 points £178 fully comp.
Gets renewal through -£468 as stated, shopped round and got same cover, same ins. co. same everything - £277 though an intermediary !!!
Work that out (cos I couldn't) .....

One of my cars has just qualified for classic insurance

I've managed to get a decent quote for the shopping cart, but it took *a lot* of phoning around....the ass wipes at Norwich Union have restructed all their postcodes and risks - the quote they gave me at the end of the summer is now 100% higher with no change in my circumstances

perhaps it's all related to those no win no fee parasites? I know people who've won tens of thousands after getting 'seriously' injured and suffered 'long term' effects. That money doesn't just come from anywhere!

All our cars are insured with Fortis. I think on aggregate they offer a fair deal. Premium was higher by 15% against last year- und on adding twins on passing test - but still best on offer given our young drivers.

OK .. so we could deny them use of the Jags und the people carrier .. given we bought und insure Astras und a Focus for them as new drivers. They do use the runabouts .. but just sometimes .. an emergency will dictate they need to drive the main family cars. They are not breeding out. They show promise which must be developped und nurtured.

But .. I think overall .. we are satisfied with our insurers who seem to offer a reasoned premium und service when required. They also pleasant to deal with on phone..und that also count for much in an industry in which you rather deal with a rattlesnake.

I thought it was standard insurance policy to raise your renewal premium in the hope you couldn't be bothered to search around for a better quote given that they were the cheapest last year after all.

Kerching..

BUT, we seem to switch every year and yes insurance does seem to be going up, whether or not we make a claim.

They moan about cost of insurance going up in the press by big % every year. Its a tradition. Mine never has more than a few quid. Maybe for first time drivers, and there is usually a reason for that...

My insurance went down each year since getting my car until the last renewal.
A change of address and 3 points meant it was hard to judge but Bell wanted to increase my premium by approx 60%.
Went with Adrian Flux and they almost matched previous years price.

I've just moved to Admiral who were 50% less for my C32 AMG than the nearest quote. 26y/o 5yrs NCB, clean license, very central London - £580.

Through experimenting with named drivers, I found it to be exactly £100 cheaper with my mum on the policy, which could be worth bearing in mind.
