Chaps, after my recent jolly jaunt stateside organising an up & coming event to feature european automobile exotica, watch this space
, my man collected moi from the airport. The journey home took us through the Barbican during the early hours. As I was fatigued from my aforementioned jaunt, I prompted my man to blow some air through the carbs, this he did with great aplomb. Imagine our surprise when a pair of officialdoms armed with clipboards, and a decibel metering device directed us to pull over.
After a brief chin-wag between the quartet, I started to think this was going to cost several rupee's to see these bounders on their way. However, and here's the twist............... they then, after inspecting my vehicle, implied that we were "Tunnel Runners!" This we flatly denied, & found totally hilarious as I was sitting in the rear. I then asked them why they would think such a thing.
They then showed me an article from the Islington Gazzette which mentioned the notorious Tunnelers, along with several photographs of high end performance machinery.
They informed me that although they have no powers of arrest, any suspected vehicle details will eagerly be passed on to interested parties. Including the Gazette which have got their teeth into the story.
After speaking to my chap at The London Times, who had made some discreet enquiries with his Gazette colleague, I believe this was no random check, There is a Rat in the Kitchen with definate media links.
Be careful out there, chock's away !

Had a quick look at the Islington Gazette. How can they get away with stating that the Tunnel Runners are "racing" when there are no allegations of speeding or dangerous driving?
What a load of sensationalist bollo.
I'd also like to know under what authority one is directed to stop under?
I live in Central London. It's noisy FFS!! If one would like the peace of the countryside, perhaps one should move to the countryside?

buttt...perhaps the residents do have a point??
After all at 07:00(ish) being suddenly awoken by hearing c50+ cars with "highly tuned" engines etc etc going under your house could be quite alarming....
To get an idea of how loud it might be all you have to do is stand in Finsbury Circus when these so called "london tunellers" are playing havoc and listen!!
Buy I don't think that they could be fairly accused of "racing" though!!
As an aside, it is alledged that on the evening of hte most recent complaint a police officer spoke to some tunellers and said "guys, don't go through barbican tunnels you know it pisses the locals off"!!

This is my biggest problem with the article. It is factually incorrect in that respect. Time for a press complaint I wonder

And that is all that should be required.
One evening per year, I have to endure a cultural ceremony that is conducted on the streets near my flat. It goes on into the early hours and is very noisy. I live with it, because as far as I'm aware it's not illegal and it's only one night out of 365 anyways.
In fact, the local borough support that cultural event. However, for another event expressing enjoyment, freedom and social gathering (the Tunnel Run) the local Borough see fit to deploy little Hitlers with noise meters. I'm sure if those same meters were deployed at the cultrual ceremony, that would be in breach.
Has our country reached the point where local policians can decide the manner in which their constituents enjoy themselves, or in what manner they conduct social gatherings?
If the residents are getting woken at 4am on a very regular basis then I might have some sympathy for them. I might have a walk down there for the next run and find out for myself
I'd still wager there is some intolerance going on here though, and this is still Central London and not the Cotswolds, but I'll hold my hand up if I'm wrong

I am assuming chrispy, and happy to corrected if necessary by m3mqueen, the nutshell version goes something like:
"The noise people from the council are monitoring sports car noise levels in the Beech Street tunnel and passing details onto the Police."

why would anyone want to make a noise in a tunnel? Am I missing something living in the sticks?.
Is this for real ?
Have you never done it ? Try driving a noisey (nice noise) car through a tunnel and give it some stick with the winodws open or top down, if that doesn't make your heart race faster you is on the wrong forum brother

In the good old days I used to go through the Clyde Tunnel in my DBS V8 at around 3am with the carb air box removed and all the windows down pulling about six and a half K in second.
Utterly brilliant noise!!
But I wouldn't do it now!!
You should have told them to run up their own tunnels!
