Recently, what appear to be some professionally produced posters have been put up around my village inviting residents to a meeting in the parish hall tonight. We are being asked to express our concerns regarding "speeding" through the village. I found these posters really quite interesting as there is nothing on them to say who is actually organising this meeting, eg the Residents Association etc normally state their name at the bottom of any announcements.

Obviously I'm going to go along and I'll let you all know who's behind this and whether there's a hidden agenda. My guess is it's the evil Sussex Scamera Pratnership seeking to justify their existence and raise a few bob for their index linked pensions.

Could be more sinister. When the rules on camera siting changes soon, my understanding is all that it'll need is a couple of letters to your local council and 'bingo' up goes a camera.

Might be worth pointing out that's its local people who get the majority of tickets (whether this is true or not, who knows!?).

Point out that if cameras are to go up that other methods should be tried first...speed humps anyone?

I'd rather have a camera than a speed hump.

Yep, easy to torch a camera. Speed humps, you need heavy metal machinery for those.

yes

Go to safe speed's website, download more information, graphs, facts and studies than you can shake a stick at, and go to the meeting armed thumbup

Commander 'Late Night Balaclava' Skellern's going to be a busy boy, non?

Rancid commie peasants, why don't they divert their energies into beating up hoodies or something equally worthwhile?

Just ask them which is safer

30mph in the snow/fog/heavy rain (delete as appropriate)
35mph whilst keeping an eye out for hazards, with good conditions.

we've had one in Holmes Chapel and Middlewich

at the monthly CAT meetings speeding gets mentioned every time so they decide to set up a community speed watch due to the fuss kicked up about speeding

only three people have volunteered to undertake training - much to the annoyance of the local police who have put effort and time into an issue they had been given the impression was a priority for the community

I expect the community were hoping the police would deal with it.

Neat diesel has been known to "melt" them, depending on the makeup of the tarmac

The thing is we have no way of knowing whether people doing the higher speed are actually any better at hazard awareness than people doing the limit. They *could* just be getting away with it each time.

I'd rather have a camera than a speed hump.

I'd rather people drove with an appropriate amount of caution and care...and neither camera nor humps, personally.

If it is just about speeding in the village, then I can't see a problem. We are forever complaining about twazzocks who drive at 40-45 everywhere, including through villages, while we drive at appropriate speeds on the open road and stick to 30 or below in villages.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that some of the people who push for speed cameras in villages are amongst the first to be caught by such camera, because they are members of the 40-45 everywhere club.

Nothing wrong with going slow in villages.

Open road, however equals open taps.

Yes. Being in a speeding car is not the same as waiting to cross the road while the speeding car drives past. I sometimes wonder if the speeding promoters ever walk anywhere.

And if this occurred there would be no pedestrian fatalities?
