Can anyone tell me the deal with speed cameras and the night time?
For instance, if I was doing naughty mile an hour on the motorway and wasnt pulled or anything, can a camera still have me? I think that I read somewhere that gatso's cant be used at night because of the flash disorienting drivers, but then I have heard of the ones with a red glow...thanks..

do they have to be visable to the driver then, or can they hide it and catch you that way??

Same rules apply day and nightime for positioning!!

If you are asking if you got caught, you would 100% know if you had been done by a Gatso. Not sure about a Truvelo or other types as never seen them go off.

Course they work at night. I have *ahem* heard of drivers 'baiting' GATSOs by making progress in the opposite direction to the camera (sets them off), especially at night.

Am I correct in saying that only fixed units work at night, and that hand held mobile units are daytime only?

There are apparently hand held units that can be used at night - for instance PH BiBs have given us this information.

However, there is ample evidence (or lack of hehe) that there is a far reduced Talivan presence at night

Hopefully the BiBs are allowed to use their Laser guns at night, I incurred 3 points in the dark, from a TrafPol on a bike... saw the red beam, but it was too late...

There are some parts of some cities where a red beam on your chest can cause untold panic. shoot

My experience backs that up, I do Thousands of miles in the dark and have never seen a Talivan, but I still believe it's possible just very unlikely. Have seen one police speed trap at night, bib leaning over his motorbike armed with a special night time hair dryer.

COuld that be a legitimate defence for trying to make progress in the other direction, or sudden changes of speed?

You'll find plenty of handheld or tripod mounted units used by the Trafpol boys in the evenings usuaully when it shirt sleeves weather hehe I've seen them many a time on the A303 & other local roads especially in the summer months.

I've rarely seen them operating in the winter though, its far warmer to stay in the car obviously

If I had someone point a laser at me at any time let alone at night I would stop next to them and shove it up where the sun don't shine. We're not allowed to use a laser pointer in my university in case is damages students eyes etc,(health and safety policy). So why can they be used by the BiB on the general public?

Truvelo works at night as I know to my cost,
Kind scarey when a front facing camera goes off in your face at night, but I am assured that the temporary blindness and disorientation it caused me was nowhere near as dangerous as me doing 80 in a deserted dual carriageway at 12.50 am.

So thats alright then.

Because BiBs are highly trained professionals who can be trusted not to shine a laser in a persons eyes over a large distance where even the smallest movement at the source would cause a large variation atthe target.

Being a mere mortal lecturer you could not possibly be trusted with such a weapon!
have you never been told by your mother to be careful "You'll ave someones eye out with that"?

Very dangerous things lasers! they were banned after a spate of student accidently having their haeds cut off by lecturers who got a bit careless !

rofl Tounge so far in cheek it hurts!

Truvellos use a flash with a magenta filter -so you know if pinged - and if you react fast enough you might just get a injury claim for being blinded after you hit that post/tree etc
