For part of my journey to work I have to cross a couple of roads, via pelican crossings. Most days this is fine, some days people 'jump' the lights for whatever personal benefit. I'm usually not fussed when this happens at traffic lights, but when people do this at a crossing it's simply putting lives at unnecessary risk.

This morning I managed to note the reg plate of the last of the TWO cars which went through on RED.

As part of my civic duty should I report this to the police - will something be done by it? Or will this cause me undue aggravation & nothing done to deal with such miscreants?

Advice greatly appreciated.

One thing is for certain, if you do nothing, then nothing will happen....

I am toying with the idea of a bullet cam - and use the footage to report:

Middle lane hogs - Driving without Due Care and Attention?

People who go outside to in (the racing line) over a roundabout, carving me up in the process - DWDC as well?

Anything else that pisses me off.

<NB, I am not perfect, but its about time we use cameras to detect all offences, no?>

I could have the first unmarked Elise Scamera car!

Just checked the registration on the RAC site ( www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/dvla_lookup/ ) & it shows up as an entirely different vehicle - was a black Espace, shows up as a silver convertible (but no manufacturer).

Now the RAC site may be incorrect but I don't want to sound like a timewaster when reporting it. Is there a way to check my sanity before reporting? furious

cheers,
SS

How did you manage to note the reg numbers?

Was it by memory, or did you have to pull over, switch the engine off and exit the vehicle to use a pen & paper, mobile phone or PDA?

If you didn't then the police will probably take the easy route of doing you for not being in complete control of your motor vehicle.

Its a hard one. Report and do the right thing. Could end up at the most extreme being in court to give evidence. Not very likely but could happen. I reported a driver once.they got me reg and address from a 'friendly source' and sent me a letter on my driving! Fitting a camera to your car sounds a great idea! Just send tapes to plod each week and a copy to the local paper! I'm sure it would make someone think about how they drive.

No doubt I would be infringing peoples rights by videoing them or some such nonsense...

One for el plod on here - would you treat MLM's as DWDCA?

If so, I reckon if we got 100 PHers with bullet cameras on their cars trawling up and down the motorways for 6 months, we could cut road congestion by a half...

When I first passed my driving test I took my sister (who doesn't drive) out for a spin.

I stopped at a pelican crossing when the light was red and she asked me why I didn't just go straight through it as there was no pedestrians around.

I didn't have a good answer, except 'It's the law'.

You can use private video recorders in the public domain without infringing anyones human rights. Its when you tresspass or film in changing rooms that you get into trouble! Insurance companies have surveillance teams doing this everyday to prove fraud. So I can't see a problem with you doing it mate. Plus they wouldn't know who was sending them I'm.

It was just memory - it was a RA55 xxx plate which was fairly easy to remember - I kinda like to think I'd remember someone trying to murder me...

So say I fit said bullet cam and go for my constitutional sunday drive, and happen to video 30 miles of MLM and OLH, and the SD card from my digital camera happens to end up at t' local nick, what could I expect the BIB to do about it?

I suspect that it would be referred to Insp. Jack Sheet...

CP, VH or any of the other BiB care to comment - I would just be another civilian layer of camera enforcement afterall?

Best be careful opening my post if I di do it though....

I guess your right mate. But I'm sure the press would love it. But what with the mad bomber on the lose I think it would backfire on Joe motorist. Shame really as mlm and others really do need to be shown what they are doing! You could always make a feature length film a sell it!

That is the problem though - 95% of the poor driving skills like incorrect lane usage, observation, stopping across junctions etc are incredibly dull to anyone other than the person directly influenced.

Not going to make prime time telly like some goons videoing themselves caning it through a deserted Blackwall tunnel is it....

Thanks for that (doh why didn't I think of that! - btw a miscreant 'i' in the link).
This doesn't come up with a result (plate was RA55 LBL) without this I'm not sure how far this'll get. Will call the local station & report back.

Only problem with this is, if you actually wanted them prosecuted you would probably have to give your name as a witness, and might end up having to go to court. If you were filming loads of offences every day it might become a bit time consuming.

.

with a bit of luck they'll just bin it, and then have a good laugh at the saddo who drives around criticising other peoples driving and filming it! rolleyes

i'm pretty sure ther's already a website up and running for people like you where you can report others bad driving and generally feel superior to other road users.

But the Scameras don't turn up to give witness do they? And as a witness could I claim costs? And the days off work would be well worth watching some old giffer explain why they did 45mph in a 50 in the OSL for 5 miles, when there was ample opportunity to pull over....
