ACPO guidelines are (from memory) 10% + 2mph, so 35 and upwards will usually result in a ticket.

As above 35mph upwards is a definite 3 points and £60 if caught.

No. Zero tolerance would mean 35 and over as explained here.

Yes that is normal. And to my mind 36 means an indicated 39-40 on the speedo?

Driving carefully counts for nought I am afraid, it is driving within the speed limit that counts.

No zero tolerance is prosecution for 31 in a 30.

ACPO guidelines DO NOT say that people shouldn't be prosecuted below 10% + 2mph over the limit.

Thanks for your replies.

As for smart arse mr rolling eyes the only reason i mentioned 'Zero tolerance' was because of what i read on a speeding website the information given was 'Zero tolerence' on anything above the recommended 35.

So mr shoveitupya please do.

acpo guidelines are merely guidlines and not law. In grampound ( a small village in cornwall with an A road going through it people have been prosecuted for 31mph in a 30. If the law states 30mph, then anything above it is breaking the law. Obviously lots of police forces/scameras use their discretion upto 35mph. It is harsh to get an NIP for 36, but still 20% above speed limit!

and yes, i am a petrol head at heart but give me a 30 or 40 limit and that's what i stick to (or less if near schools and other areas of increased hazard).

Erm, isn't zero tolerance enforcing 31mph in a 30mph?!?

Yeah, I *think* 36 is the lowest they NIP for; or is it 35mph? It's a pain cos she's been penalised in much the same way as someone doing 44mph...

No. Zero tolerance would mean that every Gatso or talivan would be a burnt out hulk.

I used to think that, but unfortunately on the majority of cars that simply isn't true any more.

I was doing an indicated 35-36 MPH down a road, thinking that this would equate to +/- 30 MPH. Obviously I was assuming my speedo, like so many others, over read. I was wrong. Copper caught me doing... 36 MPH.

Thankfully, I got the "keep your speed down!" speech then he wandered off. (Was parked up opposite a pie shop, if that matters...)

I went and bought a GPS unit and did some tests. My speedo reads pretty much my exact speed. Definately doesn't overread as some do.

So just a word of warning: don't assume that your speedo is going to overread. It's law that a speedo can be UP TO 10% over your actual speed (i.e. overread). This does not in any way mean that all speedos ARE overreading, as many people on this forum assume.

/edit: and the excuse "I thought my speedo was overreading, mi'laud" won't wash in court.

yes the digi speedo in my Tiv reads exactly the same as the origin B2 fitted. Interestingly all the council 30 warning signs round me that light up to tell you that you are doing more than 30 go off actually at 30 on my B2.

Of course it would, however they would loose most of the cases because it is not beyond reasonable doubt that 31mph indicated on a speedcam is really over 30mph because of instument error.

I'd imagine most folk in these fora who claim their speedo over-reads do so as a result of actually testing it...

It's not a popular view at times (what was the road like?) - but 36mph is plenty enough over the limit for a prosecution.

I'm one of the many who would say that NSL is open to some abuse, but 30/40 limits (in the main) should be treated with respect. Obviously there are some stupidly low limits, and also some stupidly high ones too, which is where driver discretion used to play a big part, sadly no longer.

Probably.

Or at least, I would hope so.

To be honest it's no biggie. I always drive needle bang on 30 MPH in 30's, same in 40s/50s etc. As soon as I reach an NSL, it's no sodding limit time (on selected roads only!!!).

People say it, because it's always true of road cars. If you want to find out about your car (and your tyres have the same rolling circumference as the stock ones) I suggest you check the Autosport Roadtest for your model.
