The latest Autocar magazine has obtained the new DFT Urban safety management guidelines.30 pages which encourage all councils to "lengthen journey times" by giving less time at traffic lights, road narrowing, complete road closures where possible, islands and hatching areas, all to induce congestion.Suggestions are made to cultivate the towns local media, and convince local politicians to support the ideas. No doubt there will be reduction in funds for those councils who do not cause enough disruption.

This labour cancer which is spreading throughout our towns and cities will bring disruption and waste of time and energy , and cost millions on top of the billions already sucked out from drivers each year by these parasites.like any cancer when its type is identified action needs to be taken to destroy and eradicate the life threatening parasite before its too late.

Criminal charges should be brought against the dft and the minister for negligence and incompetence, and staff reduction put in place.

The recent success of the poll on road charging and the reaction by the political slime shows the need to continue with other subjets.

That's lengthen journey times through residential access roads isn't it. That's to discourage rat runners. Do you like rat runners?

No, they do this on main roads too.

I'm a rat-runner - pushed off the main roads by the above mentioned congestion causing techniques (which are very successful in Reading).

If the above is true, it needs to be circulated far and wide - there's nothing on their website about this?

But congestion increases pollution. With Global Warming being the number 1 topic of the moment, the public need to be made more aware of this kind of mis-management of our transport infrastructure.....

we'll all have to fly everywhere and pump even more co2 in to the atmosphere.

as to their ideas - words don't even come close to describing how appalling/perverted/ill advised they are

Not at all, it is logical.

1. Spend time and money ensuring that congestion occurs, by increasing traffic light red times, reducing the lanes on the roads, having buses stop in the roads, and leaving road works unattended for weeks and months etc..

2. Complain that the country is congested and the only solution is to increase tax.

3. Spend money putting back the roads and traffic lights to how they were. Hey presto, that congestion tax worked.....

4. Then re-phase the lights etc

5. More congestion

6. Raise taxes and charges (again)

7. Repeat

Won't this type of step create more global warming? rolleyes

More time on the road = more fuel used = more taxation

But what does a government like this care about such things punch vomit

Why does it matter what route someone takes to wherever they're going.
Surely it's a natural way of releiving congestion rather that forcing it all on to one route, which will inevitably then become congested and as such people will move back to the routes which they used to use albeit with more delay than before

Errr scratchchin why don't we just build the routes and whilst we're at it have the efficient and cheap public transport that our continental neighbours enjoy? This will help accomodate the ever increasing population, which is expanding rapidly due to current government policy. Lets keep the infrastructure up to the job - we do pay for this, over and over again!

Oh I forgot, there's a big black hole in the economy, still lets throw another £100 Billion at Iraq!

It's simply scandalous that Ladyman et al are able to get away with creating congestion. We've all seen how it's done, yet in the usual British way we'll just touch our forelocks and comply.

This report should be dynamite. The gutter press and newspapers alike should be making this front page news -- especially in the light of the SPAM emails anyone signing the anti-road charging petition have just received, explaining that actually almost 2 million people must be a little hard of thinking that they don't understand how great road charging will be.

It has to be time that we show these people that us Brits have had the pee taken out of us for long enough.
