40mph Dual Carriageways - Why?
Discussion
What determines the speed limit on a dual carriageway?
For example the A610 (I think, don't remember the name for sure) between Nuthall/Nottingham and Matlock is 40mph for quite some distance and I have no idea why as it doesn't seem to be in a residential area whereas there are plenty of Dual Carriageways that are NSL with houses on them?

I doubt it is cash.
I mean, where I used to live was a lovely straight dual carriageway, and a national limit. One day, it turned in to a 50 limit, and about 1 week later a Talivan was there almost every few days.
I can only assume that the road had stopped being safe to travel at 70, being straight, no houses nearby, no schools in the area, and being between two other dual carriageways, and so they dropped it to 50 and, in order to ensure road safety from the 0 accidents that had occured previously, sent in the Talivans.

And a lot more then that
Going west you have to watch out that a slow mover doesn't pull out to pass another dawdler approaching the ikea slip road. Hug the armco before then and you'll see any talivan before he can get lock on from his spot in the laybye. Imo, it's become a more dangerous road. Lots of sleepy people doing 40. Still, eastbound you can speed up to 60 for the M1 island, it's an NSL. Boosted.

As I understand, the reasoning (and I use the term very loosely) for the A610 was the queues off the Ikea junction and people approaching Ikea/coming on to the A610 at 70 was not a good idea. Now I can understand the idea in theory but they (in my opinion) have extended it way too far beyond the Ikea junction in both directions resulting in people simply ignoring the limits. I know for a fact they place scameras in the laybys both sides (lucky for me the Mini over reads eh
) If they really did want to solve this surely some kind of variable limit signage showing queues ahead would be more appropriate and effective. And people would take more notice too. But who has ever accused our road controlling 'masters' of thinking about this kind of stuff sensibly?

Not correct I am afraid, it is a 50 to around the 'suicide bridge' then it is a 40 down to the M1 island. Be careful as the scamera sits in both the laybys on that stretch. kenny430 said:
I heard that its sumut to do with people commiting suicide by jumpin of the bridges onto the a610, but im not entirly sure. Stupid tho, most people just do 70mph still lol
Have you seen the height of that bridge? They would be quite flat, there would be nothing to hit!

One of the daftest limits in existance - you comply and think 'why is this limit so bloody low'! Another example of a covert speed limit proposal - I used to work in the area and we didn't find out about it until it was too late.
The queuing at J26 was the main reason. Also there were accidents - fatalities included a suicide off the bridge and children playing chicken on the road (darwinism in action), many accidents were caused by people doing U-Turns across the centre to avoid the queue as there was no barrier.
They have installed a crash barrier along much of the length, and put anti-suicide fences on the bridge, as well as the stupid limit, which is even more pointless heading away from the M1 - supposed to be confusing having different limits in different directions, though works perfectly well on the A50 at J24!
I was aggressively tailgated once on this stretch by a 4x4 pickup truck - I ended up doing nearly 50 in the 40 bit heading west and had nowhere to pull in and let him past due to the nose-tail traffic on the inside doing 30-35!
Easy money for the scammers, like the A515 will be when they've ignored all the protests and slapped a 50 limit on the good bit!

Ace T, look again. I think it's 40 prior to the M1 island and then there's an NSL sign which means 60 if the lights don't get you first.

Heading towards Nottingham from the M1 it's 40 to Nuthall island then NSL on a dual carriageway up to the Gateway Hotel which means a lovely 70 bit when not busy. Then 30mph SPECS land - but you can go any speed you like if wishing to pull into the Tesco garage which is between the first pair of cameras!

Some interesting replies. I don't recall exactly where the IKEA is, but I do know the bridge(s) and I'd find it odd that they would slow down all the traffic 24/7/365 to accommodate the thought that it might save a couple of people who had jumped off a bridge from 150 feet onto solid tarmac i.e. I think they'd be dead anyway?
I guess there will be Dual Carriageways like this all over the country, but I used to live at Nuthall and had gone back for a bit of a look around and on the way home it just struck me as a daft limit.

simple ecomomics really.
take one dual carridgeway
reduce the speed limit from 70mph to 40mph
add lashings of camera vans
collect millions of pounds from motorists.
easy peasy.

You're missing the point entirely.
The cash raised from cameras is nothing compared with only having to do road maintenance and surveying every five years instead of every two*. A lower standard of grip and rutting is acceptable on 40mph roads and they need considerably less maintenance.
* I'm checking the exact timings.
lol
its quite funny this thread as I have just recieved an NIP for doing 52mph on the Manucnian way last sunday morning.
The road is raised so there theres no pedestrainians for the makority and i'm sure its sign posted a 50mph. But I think as you come to the end they've signed posted it a 40 (im going back to check) and slap bang at the end (but still a dual carriage way) theres unmanned tavlivan snapping away
In answer to the OP: I think it is cash.

That's interesting because they frequently do repairs along there and cone off a single lane.
