Went on the usual family walk this morning, which includes a vist to the 'ducks' (for the kids not me!). On this route to the pond there is a 'Ford' (about 15-20m in length) with a raised footpath running along side.

Nobody uses this crossing apart from the odd 4x4 and confused/lost visiter, it's fairly remote and its use is not beneficial as there is a 'dry' route via the next road along. It's use seems to upset people living along side the stream when it is used as it causes a 'wash' into their gardens. :verysternfaces:

This morning as we approached the 'Ford' the silence was broken by the sound of sirens.
It was the fire brigade heading towards the road the crossing is on, but their progress was hampered by the godbothers Volvos parked on the fairly narrow road (the church is next door). As the 'Ford' came into sight I could see an RAC van parked just before it gets 'wet'. Just on the exit out of the water a brand new Toyota Avensis was semi submerged (well up to bottom of doors anyway). The front bumper jammed up against the nice sharp ridge where the Tarmac starts (the graval of the stream bed wears away from the tarmac leaving a big step). On the other side of the crossing was another Fire engine and belive it or not a Fire rescue Landrover complete with boat on a trailer!
Then another Fire engine turned up! (three in total, not including the Landrover) Certainly not taking any chances then! (the cars occupants had already escaped to the adjacent footpath). The car was eventully pulled back the way it came by the Landrover I think.

So that was one RAC van, three full size Fire engines, one Fire rescue boat and Landrover, Oh yeah and I forgot to mention the Fire Brigade rapid response car. A good use of taxpayers money?

What my question is that I have always thought of 'Ford' river crossings as a public right of way, am I wrong? Should the council not ensure that this road is passable? I know that use of it is discouraged due to complaints from the neighbours about the 'wash'. The water is crystal clear and when walking along side it you can see the state of the surface of the bed and the size of the rocks in there. (this is why us locals don't use it). If we are not allowed to use it then is it not the councils duty to erect 'No entry' signs. All of this could have been prevented as there is no warning of the 'Ford's' presence or indeed its hazards. Visters to the area have no idea!

afaik they are parts of roads where the water floods over them, bit like the road in the fens that floods for months at a time, accessible to big truicks and 4x4's

locally we have ford, good surface and usually floor it just in case , so gives the ducks a soaking and had some guy and his kid paddling in the ford of all places, they got very wet from the wave / spray

as for rocks in fords ? not good

Perhaps one of the 'locals' told him to go through it - "It's not that deep sir - it only comes halfway up the ducks ......."

Should think as long as the the LA / HA have put up a sign saying FORD they have discharged their responsibility. If you want to drive through it then that's your choice at that point.

There is atleast one sign if you are coming down the hill towards it, written on the street sign. Can't remember whether there is a sign or not as you approach it from the end that has broken up, but I was reasonably sure they were there from the two feeder roads.

And yes, I've been through that one a few times, acts as a good underbody wash while we wait to be allowed hosepipes again - sorry if I've messed up your garden
