Before I subject myself to the torrents of abuse from everyone. Let me say it wasn't my fault.....

I am currently in the second year of a 2 year driving ban. The ban was a result of a crash on a single lane bridge where both cars have to give right of way. Neither did and both cars crashed. No one was hurt but both cars were pretty bashed up.

Anyway I won't go into it too much but one thing that is concerning me is retaking the test in January. Has anyone had to sit through a retake and what things are they looking for.

I would class myself as a safe driver most of the time and this was an unfortunate situation. This should come across in the test but obviously I am a bit worried. I hadn't planned on ever taking it again.

Has anyone any suggetions for preparing for the test, any info on advanced driving courses and any info on where to get the best insurance deal.

Sorry, I know it shouldn't but that made me laugh!!!
Was one of the cars going so fast that it couldn't possibly give way?

What happened before is of course irrelevant. Learn the highway code (perhaps it might have helped if you'd read it beforehand, etc, ) and take a couple of lessons to learn how to pass the test again.

Some advanced lessons would be good as well so that you can learn to anticipate that kind of incident happening and take appropriate action before it unfolds.

How does the re-test work then? I would have thought if the gentleman was banned and ordered to take a retest he'd be back down to a provisional licence, so none of the advanced clubs would take him?

Isn't it back to forking out money to an ADI?

Young people find car insurance very expensive, banned drivers also find it expensive, 2 years seems excessive, don't give me the details but how long ago did you pass your test, I don't think passing your test is your biggest problem, you might find insurance almost impossible, start making inequires now, maybe you won't want to bother taking your test.

Striker- i met a guy on Sunday that was just 24 had a Lotus gt3 and only paid £1200 a year

aside from that, my friend has recently got his test back from a drink drive ban and is going to insure a car this week, i will let you know the outcome on a 1.8 crap Rover.

to pass the test, i would say dont tell the instructor or the pass test person what happened why you got banned, and drive very ver carefully, looking in mirrors every 6 seconds etc. if you want i will meet u next weekend in my saab

Aren't you pre-emptying this?
You still have 9 months to go yet & possible changes in the driving test.

Suggest you wait until your prov licence is issued, learn the latest highway code edition & do the theory test online found on the DVLA site.
Then, you can book some refresher lessons & test date.

In the meantime, save some money because it won't be cheap.

Ah, I meant taking the advanced tuition after passing the test.

Phew......lower case will do fine, I'm not quite blind yet hehe

Well, you seem to have a good idea on the financial figures.....shocking but not far out
Pleased you've managed to retain your job/profession & colleagues are supporting you.

Fraid you are going to have to sweat it out until the end of the year & don't get tempted to drive before.

You didn't consider appealing?

I am reminded of an old public information advert.. in which Ian Carmichael played one of the irate drivers who refused to move! Led to huge queues und early "road rage". The voice at the end in a very sarcastic rolleyes called them all wooden tops hehe (This ist one of series we came across on-line as part of a public information/advert celebration. I cannot recall the site now.... but seem to think I followed a link from PH laugh

But what happened to the other guy. Did he also get banned for being a "wooden top" at the time? Did you appeal this? Did you have any speeding or other endorsement which may have led to this sentence being handed down to you? It seem rather harsh if you got a two year ban with re-test und he did not... but I am being rudey und nosey here und speculating too. But no matter .. ist to concentrate on rebuilding future und learning from past but not wallowing in past.

I think this ist "extended" to duration of average IAM Test.. und possibly follow similar rural/urban/fast road.

But you are taking that test each time you drive ..or in your case .. drive next year .. Each drive ist a learning experience really.

Learn COAST ..

C oncentrate ...ist a relaxed concentration like the one when aborbed in a good book or film

O bserve .. everything.. reflections .. smells..sounds .. people.. all mirrors.. feet under parked cars.. park entrances.... barriers.. bus stops with people waiting at them.. All that tell you what to

A nticipate by way of the hazards

und you PLAN by allowing

S pace - increasing gap und margins adjusting road position (via MSM/PSL) adjusting speed.. keeping in right gear .. keeping two second rule und

Time for the journey .. keeping gap .. adjusting speed und gear

Ist criteria used to assess the Lancs/Staffs/DIS Speed Course.. und extended test like this at court insistence may be marked in same way.

Buy und read

1. Highway Code
2. Road Craft
3. Cycle Craft (toppest COAST description on page 50ff)
4. Mind Driving (see paulie's safe speed site for how to get mits on this. )
5. Driving - Essential Skills
6. Know Your Road Signs

7. What If (DSA hazard awareness training DVD with worksheets)
8. Any Theory /hazard aware test DVD. You have to be aware just when to hit the mouse. Too soon und it fail you und too hesitant und it fail you. There ist a technique to that .. which rather puts a big question mark over its effectiveness as a part of this test rolleyes

Und book a few sessions with an ADI once you are allowed back behind wheel to start the practical training.

Und save up for that hefty insurance bill. Shop around .. insurance supermarket.. confused.com und some visits to brokers und so on will give you idea as to costs to budget for over this 9 months preparation to get back on road.

Hope that help .. und next time around .. make sure you are not a "wooden top" rolleyes
