Ok I hold my hands up I'm rusty on my RT law but even I think it can't be right to have two cars parked in the driveway both with the same private plate.

Any comments?

I have seen this twice: Once in a motorway service area ages ago, two 911s both with the same reg. Not having any 'professional' interest, I put it down to a new vehicle being delivered with the new owners personal plate.

Second time was my own car: on collecting my new vehicle from dealer I pulled onto the garage forecourt and parked my old one (with the same VRM) next to the new. Admittedly in this case, the new vehicle had not been on the public road with it's new reg - and the new age related plates were ready for my old car and fitted before it was moved.

Interesting question! - Also can both be insured and taxed? I recall that I had to specify when the swap would take place for the insurance, also that the plate swap docs were done 'in person' at a local VLO.

I would say that being on the same driveway there is no problem, perhaps the owner is swapping over the regos and hasn't got the 2nd sorted.

Now, if they were then to drive the wrong car on the road then with will be in breach of RTA.

Both very nice cars and a very tidy house. Both silver but completly different makes. Both have the same plate. Very blatant very odd.

I'm interested as to why you say being on the same drive way no problem. Is it not the case that the private plate is assigned to one car and one car only. You can't swap them around between cars? I'll need to read up more on this.

That's true gently, but if they are on private property it is not a breach of the RTA.
For example you frequently see BMWs in a dealer showroom with a plate like BMW535.
It's just a marketing plate and not real; but it's not against the law.

I quite agree. I have never seen them out and about and it is a fab house on the main road so it may be just for show.

Cheers.

Can you see if they have two tax discs?

scratchchin Wondering what result a PNC check delivers?

idea Mind you upon suspicion of a crime being committed?

My vote would be on one of the VRMs having been :ahem: modified to read something other than the true VRM.

Both vehicles could be examined to establish true identity of each. It would be no offence if neither are used on a road but you dont know which one is used on the road (bearing its true identity)

So V1 could be true but never used on the road.
V2 used on a road displaying wrong number plate.

Sounds a tad dodgey to me, i would have a word and get them checked to establish that there is nothing illegal going on.

Could be innocent enough but the fact you are asking questions means that something isnt quite right and is worth a check.

Have another look in a few days time. If they had the NI non-age related plate on one car and then bought a different car, they can transfer the plate. The first car will then be given it's original number back. If they haven't got round to taking the personal plates off and putting the new (original) ones on yet, it is quite possible that this would occur.

Problem solved. They have plates that they got made up. It is not for either of the cars and they do not own the plates if that makes sense.

When the cars are parked in the drive side by side they like people to think they look cool. When they take the cars out of the driveway onto the road they pull the velcro plate off and put on the bog standard run of the mill legal plate.

It's pure vanity thats all.

I laughed my head off.

Can't believe people would waste their time doing that. There are some odd people around.

Would they really use a 3 letter 4 number plate for vanity reasons? I think not!

Interesting.

"I'm so sorry officer. I forgot to remove my vanity plate when I drove off. I didn't drive through any speed cameras, honest. It won't happen again officer, I promise."
