Speed Humps create pain, especially those with medical conditions. Emergency services are delayed by the humps. They create noise and polution. There is a petition to get rid of them - http://Petitions.pm.gov.uk/Nohumps.

If 1.8m against road pricing gets totally swept aside, this hasn't a hope in hell!

Who says it got swept aside? It shook them to the core. You don't want to go believing their bluffs.

These petitions are pointless as proved by the recent road pricing one. Regarding humps, I hate them and I am convinced they have damaged the suspension on one of my cars - recent MOT and the rear bushes had failed on the golf. Mechanic says 'now thats odd, I've had a whole lot of fairly low mileage/young cars in for MOT recently with exactly the same failure....' . So now I just avoid them. Every journey from my house now includes an extra 2 miles as I have to go the wrong way / long way around every time rather than the more direct humped route.

If they really cared about the environment they would remove these blasted things and save us all some mileage. But as we all know global warming is a load of fakery and half truth. The government is well aware of this but as ever its a fine excuse to tax us all some more...

Or it could just be that the local authority has received complaints about speeders and rat runners and have installed the humps to try and combat the problem.

Why do you think that?

It isn't true; the road pricing petition shook them to the core, as I wrote above. They now know that it's an issue that can lose an election all by itself.

...thereby causing a more widespread problem for a larger number of peopleand encouraging sales of vehicles with soft, long travel suspension.

I just hate when the hard of thinking have their kneejerk responses implimented.

Maybe you have a better solution?

My In Laws have had a swarm of these infernal things installed on their Estate and there are now 2 reasons not to go on it (only joking). Seriously though it is a mixture of 30 and 20mph areas to get to their place and I cant go over the humps at any more than 5mph. So they are obviously too severe. All it does is put me in a bad mood and makes me determined to drive fast and dangerously elsewhere to get rid of my anger.......

The best solution has to be chicanes. In the new estates around here they dont use humps any more, instead they put a refuge in the middle of the road then sweep the road around on either side. So its still 2 way, no humps but you have to reduce your speed to make it through. Perfect. But not as easy to install as the humps I guess.

so thinfourth is not going to bother - he might regret that if the Emergency services are delayed - 6 humps and the Fire rescue and Ambulances are delayed 1 minute -enough time for your house to burn and you to die of a heart attack!
Let alone the inconvenience and expense of getting the car repaired if the humps damage it - and there are plenty of garages that will confirm this does happen.

Signed the petition, can't do any harm.

But, taking matters into one's own hands, if everyone honked when they passed over the obstacle, the residents would soon get fed up and take them up.

Don't forget if these people bought houses on busy roads they paid less money for their house to compensate then had the audacity to ruin the road after they moved in...

I signed a while back as it should not be legal to put obstacles in a road that cause damage to vehicles that are travelling within the speed limit. Over, maybe, but not travelling at half the limit!

I tend to keep my diesel in second gear, accelerate briskly to 30, if safe to do so in between the ramps and then back to 10-15 or whatever for the next ramps, and repeat. Antisocial, maybe, but then so is putting damaging obstacles in the way - on main roads round where I live!

Didn't I read somewhere that 25% of fatalities happened in accidents caused by defective vehicles?

Signed. IIRC the emergency services in Reading blocked council attempts to introduce more because it was delaying them.

To the posters who said the 1.8m petition did nothing - have you been hiding under the same rock?

Totally agree, Blair's subsequent email back to everyone that signed just tried to make out that he was willing to let the people have a say before anything was agreed, something that he's never done before as far as I know.

Accepted, but they're still going ahead with it via the back door

I don't doubt that but they'll be out of government(hopefully) after the next general election especially if Bliar appoints Brown without getting real and realising that everybody hates the bloke, do you know anybody who'd vote for him? The point is that whether something is done or not the government have at least given us the chance to tell them how shite they are on their own website, if they want to listen then well done, if they don't then perhaps they will reflect on it after the election.

Maybe that's what they want us to do?

Feck it! It's free and might piss them off a little. I'm signing it anyway!
