What rights do the Police have to join a motorway and then travel at roughly 95-100 mph when they are not on a call?

This morning whilst on the M11 south bound a Police Volvo joined the M11 from a sliproad just after the M25 junction and went past me like I was standing still, (I was on my bike doing a calculated 80 mph in a flow of cars & vans), everyone pulled over and let the Police Volvo speed past them, they had headlights flashing and the blues weren't on either. I knew that they were heading for the depo on the M11 just past the Loughton / Chigwell junction and they duly indicated and pulled into the depo junction a mile or so further down.

My question is, what gives them the right to waft down the M11 at roughly 95-100 mph when they are not on a call?

Taking the Pcensoreds big time me thinks nono. If the tables were turned someone would have been pulled over and given a good going over.

I'm sorry but this has been done to death before on this forum - they dont have to be using blues and twos to be on a 'shout' or other police business. Why moan every time you see a BIB making progress? You cannot possibly know what they are doing.

No, you assumed - and you assumed they weren't using their vehicle to help them perform their duties...hence the high speed.

Get over it, I'm sure you have never riden at 95mph and not been ticketed for it!

Even if it wasn't "on a call", how do you know that they weren't training?

I'm not, I work in the city in the private sector.

Of course the Police have different rules - how would they function otherwise - no power of arrest, no power to enter your home, no power to speed to you when you are being atacked in the street etc etc?

Just be glad VH is out teaching people how to drive at the moment.

There isn't one answer above from someone actually in the job. IT specialist, solicitor, plate salesman, sorry for missing somebody out.

If you want exemptions to apply to you then join up.

If you knew the answer you would get why ask the question in te first place, other than to be a wooden spoon wielding tfa.

I'm not "job"
I never said that they were training, but you can't say for sure that there weren't so why rant on a forum about it?
You can't ask a question on a public forum, criticise the responses and then tell people NOT to reply. Doh! Well you can, but it's just silly etc

It's really very simple, there are those police who think it's right to follow the posted limits and set a good example for the public...

...and there are those who believe the exact opposite.

... and there are those making progress to get ahead of a stolen vehicle.. to respond to a domestic .. to make their way to a strike in relation to a suspected criminality.. to make their way to an urgent briefing in relation to a job on the go.. as well as some that may or may not be as so nicely put taking the censored The problem is you do not know. There are a whole host of reasons the vehicle could be speeding, some legit far fewer not. There is no legal requirement to use blue lights or sirens for any call. Its personal choice based on the nature of call, distance to be travelled etc.

As for one rule etc. Yes it is one rule for you one for us. In many areas of the law. Last time I looked members of the public are not allowed to carry automatic weapons in public. The powers you have to arrest people are different. Its not an offence for you to stand and watch someone being beaten up and do nothing to intervene.

If the vehicle in question was a traffic vehicle they in general do not exceed the limit unless they are going somewhere as required by there role and they have to be there within a designated time as a operational requirement.

As has been nicely mentioned though. Those that feel its just a job that involves driving around getting your take away and being rude to people or beating them up please feel free to go to the home office website.. I'm sure you would make a cracking cop

Not a criminal offence, but it could be under discipline regs.

VH... your forgetting about malfeasance in a public office ( I think thats what it was I'm no 'googling' away to find the correct one)... Can't remember the case but it related to an officer watching a chap being beaten up outside a nightclub and doing nothing to intervene.

I see plenty of police traffic cars along that stretch of the M11 as I commute into the city everyday on the road but I have very rarely seen a traffic car at those speeds, unless on a shout with all the bells & whistles in tow. There is a depo there and that's where the vast majorirty of the traffic cars pull into when yousee them on that particular stretch of road. I'm sorry but it was obvious this morning that they were running a tad late so used the cars livery to get there that bit quicker.

Again though you say late.. but as I explained they could be late for a whole host of matters not just tea and crumpets. All of those other matters would be perfectly reasonable and acceptable.
