Do talivans work at the weekend
Discussion
Depends how far oop North you mean. I posted here about how my dad got caught by a Talivan at 7.30am on a Sunday morning on a deserted, non-residential road - this was in Lancashire:

Yes,
There was one on the A24 near Box Hill this afternoon.
Box Hill usually has a big biker gathering every weekend, but of course they all knew about the van from talking in the car park.
Net result: the bikers 120mph up to the van, slow, 100+ afterwards weaving in and out of the traffic/wheelies etc. then loads of "Mr/Ms Sensibles" (times loads) get clobbered at 58mph (it's a dual carraigeway in the middle of nowhere with a 50 limit) with 3pts/60 quid tax.

Yep, that's a few more Mr / MS Sensibles now feeling bitter about the "authorities". I wonder how many used to feel that clamping down on "someone else" was OK until they got caught themselves. Anyway, hopefully a few more now against the tax-collecting Stalinist control-freakish regime.
Forgot to mention that...Tony!
At the risk of getting totally political and considering what i do!!!!!....i dont agree with the way they are being used.
This is my personal opinion BUT........There is undoubtadly a need for these Speed detection Devices BUT the best way to report a person is at the time and place of offence.
There are 2 reasons for this-
Firstly, the person stopped knows that they are getting at least 3 points, and secondly, the Officer knows that he is reporting the right person for the offence.
Who these Vans and Gatsos do not prosecute are, the people who couldnt give a S--t and dont insure, register and maintain their cars (or bikes).
Sadly, and in most cases, its the person who complies with the law in most other departments but sadly has been caught going just over the Speed limit.
I will get off my soapbox now !

Be careful!!!! you have been warned.
They have been spotted on the Westbound carriageway going out of London on the underpass after the Target roundabout junction. They park on what has now become the hard shoulder, after the inside lane of the road either side of the underpass became a slip road because the bus lanes on the A312 caused such a traffic tail back they jammed the A40. The limit here changes to 70mph just after the underpass where it is 50 mph. So if you see a van parked there with cones behind it, it's not doing anything useful like reparing the road, it's revenue rasing. They get after you've gone past the van, because not even these goons are going to stand on the hard shoulder with no protection. They are in plain view, but oddly the legend Met Police only appears in small letters on the side of the van.
Funny that I thought saftey cameras were already protecting us on the A40. Putting the mobile units here is surely an admission that these damn things don't work.
Whereabouts on the A416 do they go? I have just about learnt where the fixed Gatsos are. Looks like I need to learn again.

My prophecy is that sooner or later its all going to go horribly wrong for the latter-day highwaymen - once those Mr & Mrs Just-Above-Averages who know a few of the right people, and have the right connections, start getting nicked, "words will be had" in the appropriate quarters.
Some of you might recall a bright idea some lunatic in Whitehall had some years ago - make the size of the fine variable to suit the income of the offender (a doctor was interviewd on radio after he had been fined £600 for 58 on a dual-carruageway 30 .....)
I suspect it didn't take many £600 fines on those earning £100k plus before the whole idea was quietly dropped ...
