Pootling at exactly 30mph through a 30mph limit residential area on a wideish (but single carriageway) road in medium thick fog this (yesterday now!) morning, got tail-gated then overtaken by a minibus. Normally I'd think "what a tt" and forget about it, but this one was displaying a yellow child/school bus sign in the back and had at least one child on board. It'd be a stupid move at the best of times, but in fog with (probably someone else's) child/children on board, made my blood run cold.

My single previous experince with complaining to a bus company left me with little faith that talking to the company direct would be of any benefit (4 weeks later "we've indentified the driver and he says he doesn't remember nearly killing a cyclist despite taking 2 goes to force his way past", so is this worth telling someone about, and if so, who?

How do you know you were doing exactly 30mph?

I often overtake people in 30 zones who are not even doing 30 because they don't know speedometers read fast. Particularly in these days of worthless, politically motivated, "out of town" 30 zones that squander their once sacred status, I feel I have better things to do than crawl along behind a 25mph car on what amounts to an open road.

Just how foggy was it? Were you singeing his retinas with a pair of high intensity foglights when it was only misty?

Not being there I can't say, but before you jeopardise somebody's job as a bus driver, you need to think carefully how dangerous this guy was actually being.

Hello?!?

1 Foggy
2 Schoolchildren sign
3 At least one child visible (other possibly cowering under seats lol)
4 Tailgating
5 Exceeding the speed limit with reduced visibility

Don't the adverts say "better late than never"?

I think the driver is struggling to justify this one...

Yes, they also say speed kills and that's BS too.

1. Out of town, wide road, politically inspired 30 zone that was NSL last week.
2. Possible emergency requiring child to be transported to hospital.
3. Slightly reduced visibility due to mist but 200 watts of foglights blazing out.
4. 25mph slowster impeding safe progress.
5. Better trained professional driver than amateur in private car.

Or perhaps he was just a nut job. Who knows?

I've been in conversations with people before who've been incensed about someone's "suicidal" driving but in fact they're just sore about being overtaken. We just can't know without being there.

The OP should make sure he's had a reality check before jeopardising someone's livelihood that's all.

Is this in proper fog or was it just misty? I know its foggy today but visibilty is at least 1000 yards.

Also some peoples 30mph may well be a "real" 25mph

I know it was a bus, but was it really a dodgy manouver?? did the road use to be an NSL by any chance or a previously higher limit indicating that going beyond 30.05 mph may not actually harm anyone.

In a 30 zone you overtake cars travelling at 25!!! So a 5mph speed differential. How far do you need to complete that overtake? I reckon about 150 yards.

Overtaking in a 30 is just crazy - if you hit anyone in that zone the police will do their utmost to throw you to the bum bandits in prison. Is it really worth the saving of 30 or 40 seconds?

Overtaking in a 30 in a minibus shows the guy is an idiot - maybe we should ask the parents of the children on board if they are happy about it. I'm no angel but there really is a time and a place. F*** him.

Oh dear. I do hope I don't ever get stuck behind the road train behind you following a cyclist or a milk float or a horse or a breaking down moped or somebody pushing a wheelbarrow or a parked car or any number of things going unreasonably slowly for the conditions.

What you need to do is to book some driving lessons so that your risk assessment skils can be improved.

Then you will be qualified to talk about overtaking...
