Coppers or Car Thiefs????
Discussion
Got my license back today so borrowed my mates M5 for a blast round the back roads.....
I was on the A59 to Harrogate when I caught up with an unmarked M5 with "Police training" stickers on the back....
On the tops (blubberhouses) he pulled over & waved me past then followed me for a couple of miles right up my arse with his headlights on....so I pulled over & he pulled up behind me....
At this point I thought I'd been nicked!!!
He came to the window & asked if I minded letting him drive my M5 to see what the difference was between my standard car & his modified police car.....
He looked to be in full uniform (coundn't see badge numbers though) & there looked to be 3 other officers in the other car....
I explained it wasn't mine but a mates & I wasn't sure if he'd mind me letting someone drive it that he doesn't know.....
He simply said thankyou for my time & told me told drive safely & have a nice day...
I've got a feeling that these guys weren't the real boys in blue....
Has this ever happened to anyone else????

Seems unlikely they were real becuase the cars don't have training written on them. It may have been though... seems odd. Where are you old chap? Most forces don't use M5's to train although I could be wrong.
Yorkshire...
There was something that just wasn't right!!
I checked the car over when I got back too....

When I did my advanced a few years back, the cars were all plain cars (Volvo V70, Peugeot 407, Mondeo, BMW). They were either silver or flat white, and they all had a removable "POLICE - TRAINING" magnetic sign on the boot/rear hatch.
The signs were white with red retroreflective lettering.

Any chance you have the reg? most forces tend to use plain versions of the car they drive. So 330's or skoda or V70. The only ones likely to have different are officers who work on undercover units who wear plain clothes when on driving courses anyway.
site seems very slow to load pages, unlike the others which are instant
cars with removable lettering and uniforms with no badge numbers ? looks like some guys trying to get free cars, if it was me, would phone 999 and quote the reg number, after all genuine police would not be worried about that and if not genuine, their details would be greatly appreiciated...
most plod can get any car within reason to train on and asking mop to let them borrow their car....

There is surely no way that a Bib would even think of just driving someone's car to see what it's like?
Just after being stopped for a slightly dubious right turn, getting a fixed penalty, suffering the 'your a prat' & 'you should've known better' bollocking
, the conversation got around to my T5R and what power it had, when I told them around the 270bhp mark, one of them said 'The Omegas only got 190, if your going back to HQ can I drive it back!'

Either story is rubbish, or that's people impersonating police officers. Get the registration down to the nearest station, or pm me and I'll follow it up via the correct channels.

Sorry to piss on your parade silverback but I'm not in the habbit of making up stories unless its bedtime for my son.... Anyway, I reported the car reg to my local police station & explained what had happened.......
Seemed that the car in question had been stolen & i've been asked to do a photo id on the driver.....
Sounds a bit serious to me......
Keep you posted.....
Not pissing on my parade at all chap, just offering help and proper advice, it turned out reporting it was the correct advice, and if rubbish then that would have been too.
Glad it's sorted, and absolutely, that wasn't behaviour of proper plod.

Hang on Mike,
that is an exact description of the cars used at Tullialan: they are all unmarked, very pokey, (big engined BMW, MERC, etc) and have a sticker on the back that usually says police driver under instruction.
They always take out three coppers at a time with the instructor making four in total.
And I have heard of them pulling cars but never prosecuting.
So, hey, let's be careful out there! (Where have I heard that before?)

Some do - depends on the force. By coincidence I was at a meeting today at North Wales Police Driving School and their cars do have "Heddlu Police Driver Training" on the rear bumpers. Permanent stickers as well.
These days it sounds unlikely TBH. I can't believe an instructor would take the risk. I did hear a tale on good authority of a marked traffic car crew pulling a Countach many moons ago and the drivers have a swap about for a laugh.

Yes indeed, don't fall out with your sentiments there, I've done the driving courses, at the time we used similar age related large engined plain cars. However, when and if we stopped a car, we would be in full uniform, and present our warrant cards to ensure the person we were speaking to would know who we were. If there was any ambiguity a marked unit would attend.
Asking for a 'go' and with all the other doubtful instances.....that's why I said it was either a ficticious story or needed reporting asap, and if the author of this thread had any reservations about that, I would have made enquiries to ascertain if it was a correct stop, or people impersonating police officers via pnc and enquiries to the force area..
As it is, the story is correct, so quite rightly was reported, and the occupants were bogus - which is why alarm bells went off, hence my comments.
Indeed, be careful out there.
