Hi all,

Was on the M1 morning commute the other day - and the fast lane was being cleared by a black Lexus - with headlamps flashing in the customary alternating style (tick), and police siren wailing (tick) - but no blue strobes under the grille?! Nor anywhere else.

Now I've seen 'normal' cars with the headlamps set up that way - illegal, yes - but difficult for anyone to spot, unless a savvy civvy reports it. The siren is a bigger risk, admittedly, if you're going around pretending to be Plod.

So - could this have been a genuine police car? And so an unmarked police car does not have to have blue strobes anywhere at all?

This reminds of something similar mid last year coming up the M1 around Nottingham area. Wasnt a Lexus though, but an estate car, alternate flashing lights, no blues but a siren. It sat behind a merc for a few miles, obviously the lack of blues didnt help its progress.

Anyone have a clue what they are?

Folk who have realised that there is almost no chance of being caught as a traffic cop is a grey box on a pole

Saw an odd one myself on Monday. A52 from Nottingham to Derby.

Freelander - with blue and green flashing lights on the roof, and a siren. Somebody here suggested that Land Registry use them, but I can't see how they manage to "get away" with that.

Yes, as Doctors do use Green, and I've seen blue lights on blood / doctor cars before, but it seemed an unusual combination, and likely to lead to confusion, with "brand-dilution", how many different vehicles with blue lights before people start to ignore them (even more)?

Definatly a doctor i would say.
I know our local emergency doctor and he has a Impreza WRX with green and blue lights on the roof.

Intersting thing is you all moan about police driving... these chaps have no training whatsoever unless they are being driven (when normaly its an ambulance driver or someone doing a 2nd job). I know of some doctors though who have a basic licence.

All these doctors will not have any exemption without first having the necessary training ref Road Safety Bill

Following the Men in Black allegation I've got a suggestion for adding to the equipment that should be fitted to all units.

A MiB neuralizer!!!

All memories would be erased of any dodgy driving, thus saving all these threads which start off "Recently saw plod....."

Is it a goer chaps/chapesses?? hehe

Sounds like CID. Suit driving probably didn't know where the switch for the blues was.

Are these alternating flashing headlights legal? I've wondered for some time if they break the rules for use of headlamps, if they are legal can anyone use them?

I'm 99% certain that they're illegal to use (& possibly merely to have fitted - but how would they ever know?!!)
