I presume you have never had a faulty light on any car you have driven, and have never used a mobile phone while driving?

My brother had a headlight fail on a police car and on the way back to the nick said it was funny seeing people doing stupid stuff in front of him assuming a police car wouldn't have a light out.

IIRC he got a drunk driver on the way back, might be wrong about that though.

But if I did, I would expect to be punished (and pay an extra £15 for victim's of domestic violence too, plus VAT)

For the light you would normally get a VDR (vehicle defect rectification) or a bit of advice.

The mobile phone is a bit worrying, if that is what it was.

If the OP is that worried he will make a complaint and it will be investigated.

Personally, I would expect the person following me to give me a heads up that I have a brake light out, if given the opportunity (ie. stopped alongside at a traffic light).

IIRC TETRA radios are exempt from the mobile phone law as are all other two way radios

I've had one memorable evening (a few years ago) when my car was checked over by 2 different patrol vehicles for no apparent reason and they didn't find anything wrong with my car.

I wouldn't have been so pissed off if the checks hadn't
a) been within 30mins of each other.
b) been in the same location ( I was parked up in a layby having a rest and some food)

and then
c) Each of the police vehicles had a rear light out.

I decided this was a little hypocritical, so drove the local station and made a complaint in person, getting them to radio patrols in the relevant area.
