My girlfriend is a nurse and regularly has to work pretty unsociable hours. Last Sunday morning she left at 6.00am for a nine hour shift. Around the corner from us, in a 30mph zone, is a recently installed forward facing digital camera. What I'm about to say seems even less excusable when committed to paper, but, clearly half asleep, she forgot about the camera and was flashed at what she think was an indicated 43mph-ish.

I suspect that the fact that it is a digital job rather than a gatso means that she will have been nicked. Assuming a couple of mph off for speedo calibration, anybody like to hazard a guess at what she can expect?

I should add that this camera is one of the few I actually have some sympathy for - it is next to the entrance of a children's playground, close to a right turn, on a straight section that has been turned into an artificial dual carriageway thanks to the imposition of a ridiculous part-time bus lane.

On the other hand, I'm sure that in the old days, a policeman would have let her go with a flea in her ear, bearing in mind the time of day and her circumstances...

Even if she gets an NIP and does the honourable thing of self incrimination the most she can expect is 3 points and a £60 tax.

My favourite gripe: surely if it is new fangled digital technology it isn't at all difficult for the camera to know a) it is Sunday; and b) it is 6.00am and therefore the likelyhood of kids being in the playground and the traffic being heavy is very low. Under these circumstances it shouldn't be knabbing anyone unless they are significantly over the limit.

I am fully supportive of cameras in these positions enforcing speed limits at appropriate times.

Hard luck to your girlfriend! I've got an old tyre in the garage if you're interested ...

Although the TruVelo uses a different detection method, I thought it was still recorded on film like the original Gatsos? I have seen the police parked up on the kerb there doing stuff to the innards of that camera and they change the direction it faces every few weeks. If I'm right then there is the possibility the film had run out, also the speed/time she was caught might get her let off - they don't prosecute everyone from what I understand.
