Last february I had an accident at Jct 3 on the M4,I called the police and two vehicles attended, the other vehicle (an HGV) was tidied up and sent on it's way, mine was driven off the embankment to the layby and they left. No details taken, no questions asked, no one breathalised. Can you tell me wether it's possible to trace any of them as the insurance companies are taking it to court now.

Thanks Pete

Basically yes, You need to write in to the Traffic dept of that police authority, stating time, date, place of accident, who you are, your VRN (vehicle registration number) and a brief explanation of the circumstances, and why you need the details.
They do have to let you have the details if they have any (but you may need to attend somewhere with ID) and they may/can/will charge you for it (not sure how much but not peanuts)
I'm not BiB, so will stand corrected if I'm wrong on this, just that I had to go through something similar a few years ago.

Was the other HGV involved, or was it just a witness? Did it escape any damage?

The police who arrived should have reminded you to swap details under S170 of the Road Traffic Act.

Your insurance company should do all this for you, they sometimes chance their arm and ask the policy holder to obtain these details, that is so they do not get hit with an admin charge from the police. Get back on to your insurance, they know fine well how to obtain this info.

I work up in Scotland but i don't think its any different down south.
