Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone can give me some info on the cameras that sit in vans. Salisbury or South Wiltshire plod have just bought one and it is starting to be a pain in the arse. I think I may have been flashed doing 60 in a 50 but not sure how far from the van the camera takes the reading? if it flashes or not? and whether the officer would have set the camera exactly on 50mph or given a few extra mph grace?

Next 2 weeks can't go quick enough? if that is how long I will have to wait?

Any info much appreciated.

Recent article in the local rag said that the police around here target the outside lane of the M4 for example and set the trigger to 90 and at around 800 yards they can get you before you see them. Next day they might set the trigger at 80 and do all 3 lanes. So depends on what they are after I suppose and what the trigger speed is set to?(apart from money)
Apparantly when S Wales police got their first camera they also got 800+ in the first day sat on the M4

They usually aim a laser at the road surface in front of you which then bounces back to them off your number plate and triggers a photo to be taken if your speed is above a preset value.

You then hear nothing until a NIP arrives on the doormat a few days later.

These vans are usually operated by non-police personnel or policemen who either suffer serious B.O. problems, are hated by their colleagues, have abysmally poor interpersonal skills, or are seriously ugly and better off out of site.

They are becoming responsible for a serious deterioration in police/motorist relations in the UK.

I got an NIP in the post last week, having been allegedly photographed doing 61 in a 50 on easter monday. Some other paperwork came with the form - two 'information' sheets, telling you whats what and how things work.... (the contents of which i'll type in full when I get a chance....)

One thing I did find interesting is that the vans can apparently target you at anything up to 1km away, travelling in either direction, so even if you've gone well past the camera, then boot it, you can still get done....

Q - The mobile camera can't see me if I can't see it?

A - The mobile cameras used in highly marked vans use laser technology to detect the speed of vehicles. The system is accurate to a distance of one kilometre. They park in open places, respecting other road users. Speeding motorists can be photographed either approaching or receeding. Motorcyclists are NOT exempt

Must have a pretty good camera for evidence of the plate from a km away...

My understanding is that they can get you up to 1km away in either direction meaning on either side of the road, but you still have to be approaching them in order for them to get your reg. - the laser will work up to 1km away but the visual for your plate won't!

Therefore, if you're 1km away and disappearing into the distance you should be safe (or you've already been nabbed when you went past them! ).

They can still do you even if youre out of video range, as all they have to do, is to show an uniterrupted video stream to a court, that the car speeding is yours....id be a little bit careful about it, or get a front and rear laser jammer.

Good advice about being careful & buying gadgets.. however I don't agree with "out of sight" ! what if a fast moving bike overtakes you, "out of sight", but triggers the laser scamera? nah, they can't do this.

BTW people, bikes *are* exempt.. don't ask.

Interesting quote from UK Speed Traps. The author is the site owner and the piece is about his outing with a police traffic unit to see how they work (Graham is the traffic officer). This is just a snippet in relation to laser jammers...

So what next, well I brought with me some of the free stuff sent to me by manufactures of defensive equipment, in this case a Laser Jammer, $480 worth of jammer 400mtrs to 10mtrs cover they say. With a simple two minute installation.

We all wanted to see if it worked. We fitted it to our test car, as per the instructions supplied and off we went, four runs down the road later and I was sure glad I never bought it.

Graham just smiled and said we have not seen anything that works yet. He then went to tell me a story about a driver with a £500 Detector, Radar and Laser. He complained when he was stopped that it never went off, and to make matters worse, when they pointed the Laser gun at it with only a few inches between the units it still never went off.

Seen the tests performed by the uk speedtrap site? Lrc 100, recommended. Snooper sld920, recommended!

Laser jammers DO work, the police would like us to think they dont.
Remember the guy in north wales, who kept riding past the police speed trap and jamming them? They were going to prosecute, but crapped out at the last minute...probably didnt want a test case....
Laser jammer is the last line of defence if all your other senses fail you, or theyre hiding.

I imagine Notts have got them to help solve their crime problems. Highest level of recorded crime in the country and what do they do about it? More speed cameras

Simple answer to all these problems is remove those front number plates. The fine for a missing one is a lot less than the speed or points.
