Hi - left buying the RFL for my motorcycle till the last min - paid up on time but not recieved the disc yet. Not a problem as the bike lives in the garage most of the week, safely chained to the floor..... but now it's the (sunny) bank holiday weekend and I'd really like to ride - but the RFL has not yet arrived. I know that failure to display is an offence, so accept that in law I should not use the bike, however can any of the BiB here give me an idea as to the likelyhood of being prosecuted, assuming that I am behaving in all other respects, ie riding safely, have MOT, paid for RFL, insured correctly, legal numberplate, not speeding etc.? (and have printout of the DVLA confirmation of RFL payment on me)

I will likely stay on the safe side, but there's a local meet that I'd really like to attend - be a shame to miss it....

Thanks in advance.

[irony]

Pull the RFL disc off your car and stick it on the bike.

Unlikely anyone will spot it, unless you get pulled for riding like a tit, wich is not going to happen.

Probably a bigger offence than no RFL, but given that the courts give the scroats round here fines of £50 no MOT, £30 no tax and £70 no insurance, plus 3 points for not having a licence (EH???) why worry.

ETA: I AM NOT BIB!!

Edited again, in light of DvD's comment, to add [irony] to top of post.

IGNORE THAT ADVICE ^^^^^^^^^^

Displaying an Excise Licence from an other vehicle is a serious offence of fraudulent use and could lead to the embarrasment of having to bend for the soap in a HMP shower......

The offence of using a vehicle without an Excise licence is a revenue offence and proceedings undertaken by DVLA. Police report such offences on special form, which by what has been said, would arrive at DVLA after a Licence had been issued so NFA.

That leaves the offence of failing to display a current Licence for which FPN or Court action could be taken by Police.

If stopped and old Licence displayed that was current to end of 4/07, producing current driving docs and an explanation that Licence applied for ( with proof 5 beans)then it would be a constipated Plod that would report for the trivial offence.

yes your "own" posts are hilighted to you and you alone to make them easier to see when you're trawling through a thread.... Don't worry, you're not on a super secret warning or anything

Thanks for the replies... even the 'dubious' ones

DVD, thankyou for the perspective: I think I guessed that was the case, but it's not the sort of question that I'd like to walk up to a traffic car, knock on the window and ask the driver!! eek

Will hopefully arrive in tomorrow's post, so academic anyway!

(oh, and DVD - sorry no idea what's happening to your post..)

I drove around for 5 months without displaying with no problems (lost the disc down the air vent near the windscreen). I had paid the tax and they could find that out just by checking their systems. If you're not parking in the middle of town where parking attendants might be around I don't see the problem. I know what the law says, but surely this was to combat non-payers before the computer age hit us.
