Posted off for a change of numberplate. Thing is, I'm away on business at the moment and predicting that the new plate will take force before I get home, I've put the new plates on already.

I presume in the unlikely event that I encounter John Law on the road, and the change hasn't gone through at DVLA, his ANPR will flag something up and stop me.

But what's the deal? I suppose any paperwork from speed tax falling due will find me through the last owner of the numberplate or something, and if I'm behind the wheel getting stopped, I can tell him the previous number on the car to prove insurance etc...

In today's police state though I can't help thinking there'll be some sort of ludicrously over the top punishment dished out...

I got stopped a couple of times in this situation and didn't get into any trouble.

Although BIB may want to know where/how you got a numberplate when the documentation wasn't in your name (assuming that's what you're saying).

Would you adam and eve it!

Just drove past an ANPR setup and........ *nothing*

Sheesh. I was thinking I was about to have the old GT2 confiscated...

It's an Irish plate so perhaps I'm not on the database they're checking? Who knows. Actually if that's the reason maybe all the crims should have SRZ 2314* to get off scot free...

Mmmmmmmmm, I wonder, if you just plastered the back of your car with numberplate stickers it would presumably confuse anpr systems and wouldn't be illegal...(?)

(?) Means I'm thinking aloud and I'm sure someone will clarify/elucidate/refute shortly.

Looking on the RAC reg lookup I see my old number is still my car, and the new one some sort of 50cc moped. Surely if it's on the DVLA database they should have pulled me last night?

Now of course I'm all paranoid -- having to drive a car with a 50cc moped registration....

Perhaps the BIB can help me out? If you're following a 911 GT2 but your ANPR flags up a 50cc moped, what would you do?

Stop it and find out why.

Well that's fair enough. And if the "why" is because the paperwork is in the post, what would your action be?

Dibble? DVD? VH? Anyone? What would you do when I told you the correct numberplate, found it to be registered in my name and insured? The actual plate is written on the tax disk too. But I am 150 miles from the registered address...

What would you do?

My guess is that the number-plate checking is automatic (hence the name) and viewing BiB only blinks when a plate comes back as uninsured / stolen / interesting...and your (new one) is currently fine...albeit registered to a different vehicle.
