Blimey, never thought they'd ever do that whilst roadworks still ongoing

"A spokesman said the number of deaths on the M1 had fallen from four in 2005 to one in the past 12 months."

Nothing to do with random variation then? rolleyes

Exactly - a more meaningful stat would be number of incidents where one or more people were KSI...

Laudable, yes, but how come last week 41 was an offence and now it isn't? What changed? Someone's whim, that's all. And that's all that speed limits can be -- someone's opinion of what's safe and what isn't.

yes - the significant (in a non-statistical sense!) point is that for once it has been decided to apply some common sense and acknowledges the fact that sometimes (sometimes having a higher limit can be safer...which hopefully will be the shape of things to come in the future.

Having non-statisticians publishing analysis of data that is a truncated poisson (i.e. small number of events, often with a mode close to zero) is ridiculous, and clearly likely to lead to misleading information being published - such as the outragous claim that dropping from 4 to 1 deaths in a similar time period is an "improvement".

On the face of it, 1 death this year compared with 4 last is better, but in fact it is an absolute meaningless statement and you might be better off judging an improvement by sticking your thumb in the air.

A larger section of the carriageway is now complete, the appropriate barriers are in place, and the workforce is further from the road...

At least with this system, when their whim changes, we know what it is, it must be published correctly and all you have to do is keep below the big number in the round circle to know that they won't prosecute you for it.

Or solutions are just as whimsical, but without the protections afforded to this one.
