Having seen a fair few trafpol pull people over I have noticed that some people do panic a bit when signaled to pullover and park in rather obstructive places when they could've travelled a little bit further to a safer place. I suppose trafpol would say move on down a hundred yards etc if they were really badly positioned. My question is can I confirm I have been signalled to pullover by raising my hand in the mirror (with all five fingers spread out) and carry on to the place a bit further down where it's safe without looking like I'm going to start a pursuit or having Bib giving me a word for not pulling in immediately?

A friend of mine was signalled to pull in my a police car in a very inappropriate place, so he continued about 50 or so yards down the road only to have the police car over take him and force him to pull over by driving across the front of his car..

To be honest, I guess it depends what they are pulling you over for. In this case they pulled my friend for yelling out the window at a car blocking his entrance to the roundabout and the police thought it was aimed at them so were quiet angry and claimed he was attempting to make a run for it.

Indicate to confirm you've seen their command, ease off and pull in where it's safe.

If they say anything simply state you believed it was important to stop in a place you considered safe and the spot 100 yards back was not, IYO, as safe as the spot you are in now..

I don't think that orders from BiB absolve you of responsibility to drive safely. If you think that they're ordering you to do something that you think is dangerous then imo it's *your* fault if you do it.

I think it would probbly depend on who was stopping you; I'd like to think a TrafPol/other advanced driver would identify a safe place for you to stop.

I'm not so sure this would be the case with other officers, depsite the training given in stopping vehicles on a "Standard" driving course.

In Holland, in 9 out of 10 times when an unmarked police car wants to pullover someone they will overtake the car, and then activate the maxtrix sign at the back saying "STOP POLITIE" (STOP POLICE) followed by "POLITIE VOLGEN" (POLICE, FOLLOW US) and they will find a suitable place to pull over so that the pullover driver doesn't panic and pulls over in the middle of a busy highway or something.

The only time I have been pulled over I acknowledged them with a wave and indicator but carried on at reduced speed, approx' 45mph until I reached a layby 250yds or so further on. They seemd happy enough as it allowed us both to stop off a SC section of road.

I had actually eased off and moved as far left as possible for a few seconds prior as I had assumed they were wanting to pass to get somewhere quick.

Unclear. You are obliged to do as directed, so if a constable in uniform directs you, he needs to check first that it is safe.

I had a good one a couple of years ago in my Tuscan. A Corolla in front of me got fed up and undertook an unmarked car that was sitting in lane 2 of a dual carriageway overtaking absolutely nothing. The Corolla sped off and I came up behind the unmarked car. I gave him a few seconds to pull over, he didn’t and I too got fed up and floored it up his inside (not realising it was an unmarked car of course!!).

The dual carriageway was empty and I had put quite a distance between myself and the police before I happened to notice in my mirror that his blue lights had come on. I backed off to let him catch up, he drew alongside and signalled me to follow him. I acknowledged his signal with a wave and we both chased the Corolla (who was not hanging around) until we caught him up near a lay-by where all three of us could pull in.

Had this in France this weekend. French Gendarmes pulled us for speeding on the way to the airport. The cash point was broken, so they told us to follow them and that they wouldn't hang around to ensure we'd make out flight! 120mph run to the next cashpoint, after being pulled over for doing 85 was somewhat amusing. Almost worth the 45 euros! Thankfully i wasnt paying!

The two police in the car weren't traffic officers, I don't think they'd ever tried pulling 2 cars at once and were making it up as they went along.

that is stupid! i cant believe you were pulled for 85 then instucted to go faster. that is why the police get no respect from MOP. they do not have a clue. how about an IQ test or something to get in!!?

Hardly unclear. Constable can only give lawful directions. Remember the Eichmann defence?

A constable can give an unlawful order, but he shouldn't, big difference. Most law abiding citizens, who very rarely have contact with the police, if they are told to do something by a policeman will do it without thinking whether its safe or not.
