Yesterday; driving up Muswell Hill about 1800hrs...

Long que of traffic; bus lane restriction until 1900 and police car (Astra) drove up the bus lane... no blue lights... can they do that?

Yes they can.

Only if they are transporting a suspect, as that is deemed as "public transport".

As long as it can be 'justified', the use of bus lanes is one of the exemptions that may be claimed by any Emergency Vehicle.

Normal speed, two officers (chatting with smiles on their faces). There didn't appear to be any urgency in what they were doing or where they were going. I guess that pretty much 'justifies' it?

So, the BiB aren't allowed to be happy while at work?

Maybe they weren't going anywhere on official business, maybe they were. Either way there are far more important things to be getting het up about. And given that they're public servants, and we pay their wages I'd rather they got to where they're going and did something useful rather than sitting in traffic twiddling their thumbs.

Be fair.

They were probably late in picking up their takeaway.

I don't think they'd have been smiling if that was the case.
