Stolen car- inform DVLA? then what?
Discussion
If your car is nicked and you don't get it back, I expect you will be paid out by an insurance company. You should send the documents (V5) to the insurance company because after they pay you out, the vehicle is their property. If it then turns up, they may dispose of it how they wish. If you are contacted by the police to say it has been recovered, you can approach the insurance company and make them an offer to buy it back if the car is worth it after the theft.
If your car is not insured, then you should inform DVLA that the vehicle is no longer under your control and that it has been stolen. The PNC (if you have reported it to the police) will have a record of the registration number, the VIN plate number and the engine number should any of them surface. The police may then contact the owner and let them know what has been recovered. In this situation the vehicle or parts will still belong to the person reporting it stolen.
