Hi I park my car with a cover on it on the road (not private) and just been thinking that without it showing a tax disc will this cause me problems. Or will they be able to tell if it is taxed by checking on a computer using my reg no?

If your car is taxed, you do not have to worry!

PNC (police national computer) is linked into DVLA, VOSA and also Insurance data bases. If you have no insurance, MOT or tax, a simple registration check will reveal that.

If your car has a cover on:

1) How do they know it is actually a car underneath (LOL!)
2) If they lift the cover up to obtain a numberplate then...
3) ...surely they can lift it up a bit further to see any tax disc.

Isn't it the case that if your vehicle has a cover over it then wardens are not allowed to remove it?

I heard this anecdotally in relation to scooters left on pavements. The owners were purposely covering number plates to avoid tickets.

As far as I know it's still an offence not to display the disc. A warden would not be expected to rummage around under a cover I'm sure.

Buy a cover with a window in it to allow the tax disc to be seen.Or cut a hole in the cover where the tax disc is and get someone to sew in a see through piece of plastic.

Mmm ok thanks for the replies...my cover was bought recently and doesnt have a space for a tax disc and it looked like most of them on the market were similar. It's a good cover that has two straps to keep it in place which is great as the wind doesnt knock it off...but equally you would have to undo the straps to see the tax disc which goes back to my original question. I think it probably is illegal not to have the tax disc showing i'm just interested to hear what is the likely response from a passing BIB? I'm certainly not the only one with a car cover on a vehicle on the road....

Thats not strictly true is it.

Its illegal not to display avalid tax disc and by covering your car you are failing to dislplay, theres a recent thread on here where someone was fined in exactly those circumstances
