When overtaking a tractor on the a1 today I got flashed by a road side camera (at me, not behind me). However, the flash was a pink/purple colour. Was this one of the forward facing infra-red cameras? There was only 2 lines on the road, not the usual Gatso arrangement. So, what are the chances of me getting points for it (considering the vehicle I was using at the time doesn't have a front number plate)?

thanks!

Exactly where was this? I know there are some near Grantham and some in a 50/60 zone. Are these new?

Are there definitely no cameras on the 4 lane A1(m) bit then? None hiding behind the gantries?

That's a relief, cos I had a slight moment of madness travelling along there at 4am a couple of weeks ago.

Nothing for LITERALLY miles in either direction on either carriageway, and I was pottering along at 73mph or something daft

Couldn't resist seeing if the car would do over it's claimed top speed - either it can , or the speedo on Citroen BX's is very optimistic - I suspect the later!

(the 'book' top speed is of course 70mph m'lud)

Cheers, Phil

the first response was wrong.

its not yes and nil.

Its no and nil. This camera is at Beeston. It is a Truvelo camera relying on an inductive loop with sensors in the road to assess speed. These are less common in this country but becoming more so because they counter driver recognition disputes by taking a frontal photograph.

Try taking the number off the rear of your vehicle and wearing a halloween mask for complete anonymity.

Two of my friends have been nicked on that very stretch for speeding – both around the 115mph mark. It's regularly patrolled by plain-wrapper traffic cars (used to be a silver Mondeo V6, but I heard they were using a 5-Series now).

But it's got great visibility. So when it's empty and if you keep your eyes open, there's no reason why you can't do top speed runs there. Well, when I say no reason, I mean other than getting up the tradesman's if you are caught.

The first response was corrent, it's yes and nil. A Truvleo is a forwad facing camera that uses an infra-red flash. It does use inductive sensors rather than radar to determine speed, but this wasn't part of the question.

Watch out for the bridge just before the Little Chef after the Huntingdon sliproad when heading north. As the talivans like to sit on this bridge and because of the motorway gantry in front of the bridge, they are hidden from view until it is probably too late. I know this because I was coming southbound on that section a couple of months back and could see them parked on the bridge. So make sure the speed is low when travelling upto that section.

I was lasered on that four-lane stretch - 28 day ban. Genuinely couldn't see them on the edge of the bridge. Have seen an indicated 180 on the same stretch since, however

Oh, and why would taking the *rear* numberplate off work for a front-facing camera?

Because in the original post DJ said that there was no front plate on the car. So by taking off the rear plate and wearing a mask, no camera can get him. Unless of course he drives a unique car etc. etc.
