Who owns a road angel?

sorry but trying to now decide between either the Geodsey (sp?) and Road Angel units.
The Road Angel is more expensive but has the laser detector, whereas the Geodsey doesnt. However, it seems to me that the radar detector isnt that great in terms of it would be too late to reduce your speed by the time it alerts you. Do any Road Angel users find that the laser detector has saved you in the past from the advertised "scatter" that it may pick up. If not, it seems pointless having laser detection and I may as well go for the cheaper unit that picks up the fixed scameras just as well....?
BTW - I do not want to get a jammer as worried about the legalities of them.

I have a road angel. TBH I think it wins hands down over the geodessy. One of the main features over the geo is the directional alerts. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the geo still alerts you to cameras even if they are facing the opposite direction. Also the GPS speed read out is a great little addition on the RA. Just shows how inaccurate the car speedo is.
As for the laser detection. I've sadly never had it go off. I know that a lot of people say that if it goes off it's probably too late. But there is the chance that you might pick up scatter, or be able to slow down quick enough so that if a second reading is taken you will be okay.
Go for the RA, you really wont regret it. It has lots of good features of the geo which makes it worth it. Like not losing your stored/deleted sites when you update it. Plus the laser detector is only 30 quid more and looks really kewl when attached to your windscreen

Just got the Road Angel, and a LRC100 jammer to go with it.
Road Angel is great, couldn't be simpler to use. The laser detector that comes with it has stayed in the box - as you mentioned its unlikely you'll have time to slow down if it does detect a signal. The jammer is being wired in to the Road Angel instead.

Ive had a RA for 6 months now and its is brilliant I also have an old bel radar/ laser detector but it is becoming more obsolete. I will be buying the laser add on for my RA soon. If you want to know if laser works yes it does as I have registered several scamera vans on my many travels and even the Bel picks them up with plenty of notice with the laser detection. No more NIP's yet thankfully!!!
Just gone through the same decision process myself and decided on the Road Angel pretty much for the reasons others have mentioned in this thread. It also has an internal ariel, so it really is a case of plugging into the cigarette lighter, sticking the laser detector on the windscreen and you're off. The Geodesey has an external ariel, so more wiring required.
I also wanted a unit that works both in cars and on motorbikes, which the Road Angel does (with the addition of a £20 bracket for the bike).
I too have decided to stay on the right side of the law (or at least the grey area that surrounds jammers) and not go for the jammer. May change my mind in the future.
I can't tell you how the Road Angel performs as yet, as it doesn't arrive until tomorrow.

I have just bought the Road Angel with Laser alert, but not met any laser traps yet ( never there when you want one!)
I have already deleted a non-existant camera and stored a new one which was very simple to do. That information has been uploaded to the central database, which I believe they will get confirmed, and made available to everyone else when proven correct. So far it has been very good, and the way it only detects cameras on your direction is brilliant.

I've ordered a Roadpilot. I'm ashamed to say that it was mainly the "wow-factor" of having a piece of silver, touch screen gadgetery in the car that sold it to me. Well, that and the the 35% discount! (£325 instead of £500) Having read most of the information on the net now I'm convinced it's a good bit of kit. Relatively future-proof too, as it can be updated with both new hardware and software.

Gixxer have you managed to try it out yet? I'm going to buy 1 next week! just wondered if it was easy to fit to your bike? and will the tinted screen on my bike affect the laser detector?

Pesty, received the Road Angel yesterday morning, but the bike bracket is not coming until next week (they were out of stock).
Works great in the car. Will let you know how it goes on the bike. I don't envisage problems with the tinted screen (mine is tinted too). It's UV and heated screen that apparently cause problems.

Also look at Trafficmaster SmartNav. It's primarily a navigation system - you press a button, speak to the operator and the download a map into the car. The map is read out (no display) with directions like "take the second left in 300 yards". But it also now has 'accident black spot alerts'. You know those black spots signalled by a yellow box with a flashing light. As you approach one the Trafficmaster beeps - even if you are not using it for route navigation. It updates itself over the air. I've been on the beta test and it's great.

ok, went to halfords and bought myself a road angel. Seems to work fine when the laser addition is unplugged but when that is plugged in it goes mental every few seconds suggesting there is a mobile unit around
any ideas? i have registered on the web site and will do an upload after 24 hours. dont see why this would make any difference though

Make sure the laser module plug is plugged in firmly.
If it's only partly plugged in it will go mental.
Also I noticed that my Road Angel appears to be set off by the car alarm sensors. I noticed this when I had the Road Angel active with nobody in the car and doors closed but not locked. When I went to open the car door, the mobile alert sounded even though the car was parked in my driveway. I presume from this that the internal sensors on my car alarm become active when all the doors are closed but with no key in the ignition, and when I open the car door it sets off the alarm transducers. The car alarm does not sound in this condition.
I don't have any problems with the Road Angel in normal use though, and I am very happy with it so far.

I dont know if they have improved the smartnav much but the navi side was hopeless , it told me once to do a u turn on the M25 because i was going in the wrong direction
luckily i had my Alpine navi to fall back on cos i was going the right way so ignored the smartnav . It really needs a screen to be of any use untill then smart nav will be second best IMHO . Have you spoken to amanda yet at smartnav

We've got a Tomtom (www.tomtom.com) SatNav system running on an HP Ipaq (www.hp.com) and we're very happy with it. We took it to France recently and it was very useful.
There is a lot of 3rd party software and support for the system including a database of speed cameras. This can be downloaded and the camera locations are displayed on the navigation display. There are a number of 3rd party programs which will tell you when you aproach a speed camera and produce various noises and displays.

I plugged it into the mains last night indoors and noticed that as soon as I held the circular laser attachment it set the mobile alert off. The bleeping is driving me crazy so its left unattached at the moment....
anyone got any more ideas?
Mine does the same indoors if I touch the Laser sensor.
Does your device only do this when you touch it, or does it alert all the time indoors. If it alerts all the time then it is faulty, but if it only alerts when you touch it then this is normal, and the problem appears to be your car alarm.
If it doesn't alert indoors, I think it is picking up your car alarm sensors which must be always active.
What car alarm do you have, or is it factory fitted. perhaps you could check with the dealer/manufacturer to find out if the sensors can be switched off when the ignition is on.

I use my Road Angel with the TomTom Navigator software on my Ipaq for navigation. I think the Road Angel is the only GPS alert device that has an RS232 socket and provides this extra useful function.

hmm - no alarm so not that. Just starts going mental every few seconds when mounted on the windscreen. Have called Blackspot today and they are going to send me a replacement. See how i get on with that. Will let you know.
