My mum and I were out shopping today and as it was lunch time we were heading to get some food. As we walked along the side of the retail park car park a young chap in a clio with 4 others in it was driving slowly in the left hand lane approaching a right hand turn when a hyundai green thing hammered up on his right and blocked his path around the corner. My mum and I thought there was going to be a crash but there wasnt. The guy in the hyundai then jumped out of his car, ran around the back and shouted at the driver of the clio to "Get yer window down sonny!"
Which the boy did and was then told "Im an off duty police officer, get out of the car Im taking you down the station and charging you with undue hesitation and failing to indicate" He then grabbed the boys keys from his ignition and got him out of his clio and shoved him into the back of the santa fey and drove off. It tokk a few seconds and we went over and asked the remaining occupants of the car if the "copper" had shown any ID. He hadnt so mum phoned the real police. Whilst we were waiting for them to arrive the guy reappeared nearby and dropped the young guy off again at which point he came back over and we told him the police were on the way. It transpired that the young guy had alledgedly moved accross a lane on a roundabout about 4 miles away and angered Mr dipstick in the hyundai who had followed him all the way to the retail park and then pulled this moronic stunt. The young guy had obviously recently passed his test and when we saw him was obviously a bit shaken up and seemed to genuinely have made a simple mistake earlier and was merely taking his friends for a birthday lunch and not out for a spot of street racing. Anyway the police arrived and statements were taken from 4 eye witnesses, myself included and the 5 car occupants, the clio driver included and that was that. The police have the hyundais reg number as i got a note of it. So what will happen to the guy who pulled the stunt? Im assuming he'll be charged but what with? and what will he likely get for his road rage?

For impersonating a police officer & kidnapping he could get to be "Big Baba" from block C's new playmate.
Probably nothing for the rage.

CPS will want to keep it simple. Common assault on the driver me thinks. The "kidnapping" aspect will most likely be dropped likewise the impersonating aspect. Crown court for all this? Highly doubt it.

Possible unlawful imprisonment.
I think the fake PC may live to regret this little escapade.

This incident is way way more serious than the vast majority of "done for xx in a yy limit" posts we see here. The day they invent a camera that can enforce shit like this, I'll be all for it.

Hopefully with time added on to run consecutively for running a Hyundai Santa Fe.

Arrest for undue hesitation and failure to indicate? Be a fair few Micras off the road then.

Becca's example is excepted from that comment for obvious reasons, she's on here, and a PH'er, so obviously never pinged for hesitation, even on Just a Minute.

Impersonating a police officer - by pretending to be one

Fraud - obtaining keys by deception

Theft - of the keys

Kidnapping/Abduction - comitted forceably or by fraud(linked to impersonating an officer of the law)

Dangerous driving - deliberatley engaging a manouver causing another car to take emergency action.

Assault - putting the other driver in fear and alarm, forcing him into another car (regardless of being a joke) the assault was comitted it cannot be undone.

This will most probably end in a prison sentence, if a RTA charge then also a ban.

I am the only one wondering what the guy did with this poor youngster while they were away? Did he just drive him around and tell him off or something?

This is way out of order and IMHO goes far and above road rage!

they essentially took him for a 10 minute drive where they were meant to be taking him to the local police station and didnt. They pretended to phone the police and eventually dropped him back off near where the initial incident had happened and we were still standing.

Maybe he really was an off-duty Police Officer - you'll know, becuase you'll never hear anything about it again.

"undue hesitation and failing to indicate" seem reasonable charges to me laugh

I think the guy in the Santa Fe is going to regret this.

The police can take impersonation very seriously. I remember years ago I was out with a couple of mates and a guy approached us pretending to be a police officer. We (being surprisingly sensible for teenagers!) decided to call the police station to check out the guy's identity.

We got halfway through the call and he buggered off sharpish.

The police brought eight cars, raided the flatblock the guy had disappeared into, and took statements from all of us.

I think what with the increase in this kind of activity, if someone "pulled me over" and I wasn't certain about their credentials, I'd be saying, "I can follow you to the station in my own car, or if that's not acceptable I'll stay parked up here and you can call out a marked unit." I imagine you probably risk some slight unpleasantness if it's a genuine police officer, but it seems the safer option.

That sounds about right. That would be what they would throw at the Guy.

Any charge for driving a Hy'n'dry?

I hope this guy gets suitable punishment. I can just imagine what the poor young lad felt. It's awful. Please do let us know if you find out what happens.

With respect, that is an exam question answer.
I would expect one charge, on the KISS principle.

Well you cant say he cant be charged with any of those principles, however i agree the cps would have the perogative in deciding how to charge and which ones to focus on, amalgamate and exclude - however there is no limit on what an indictment can read.

As for a charge of driving a santa fe - unfortunately not atm and retrospective implementation is illegal under international human rights laws.

However consider Burmah oil co v Lord Advocate?
