Traffic Control Officers or whatever they are meant to be...
Discussion
What is the point in them??? they are not police, they think they are....
Twice today while driving on the motorway, the traffic slowed rapidly, for no reason... then about 2 miles down the road, there they were..... parked in their shiny Landie, doing nothing whatsoever to aid the person that had broken down, apart from giving them a foil blanket like a marathon winner.
I think they are a waste of money.
In conclusion, they get there before the police, and cause the traffic to slow alot earlier, therefore slowing the traffic eariler, causing more jams, and maybe more accidents.

Do you mean HATOS? (Highway Agency Traffic Officers)
Provide a usefull service IMO, although it would be nice to see more BiB on the roads, they can do non crime related tasks that a policeman would otherwise have to do (and therefore allow the police to concentrate their resources elsewhere)

How do you phone for one? Not that I want one at the moment.
If you have stopped for some reason on the hard shoulder, make your way to an Emergency Roadside Telephone (the orange emergency phone). There will be a direction indicator on the blue/white marker posts every 100m along the hardshoulder showing you the nearest, safest phone. Tell the control room operator the nature of your predicament. If you are deemed to be a "vulnerable" road user, a HATO patrol will be sent to you.You can also use your mobile phone, but expect to be asked to properly identify your location.
