Hi, I've just noticed that my tax ran out on 31/05/07. yikes

I thought I had a years worth of tax, but it was my G/F who sorted out the tax last time as I couldn't find the time, and she paid for 6 months instead. She probably told me but I must have forgot. I don't hold up much hope that the DVLA won't fine me JUST because they sent nothing to me in way of a reminder. I haven't even received a fine from them....yet cry

So, what options do I have? Is there anyway to avoid a fine? MOT is coming up, and I need the cash for that.

go buy your tax today! you might get lucky, but the DVLA definitly do issue automated fines if your car hasnt been taxed or sorn'ed.

£80 fine IIRC frown

How do I do it without the reminder? You need it to do it online and the post office.

You dont need a reminder to tax it online (at least I did not), you can use the ID number on the V5.

dvla systmes are at least 2 weeks behind so i wouldnt worry about getting an automated fine for at least a month after your tax runs out. pay it now and u will be ok. the bib seeing you on the road without tax is a different matter though.

you dont need a reminder to do it in the post office either, Insurance cert and MOT is all thats needed. You dont even need your v5/logbook. There is a form to fill in before you go to the counter though.

SORN penalties are sent out a full month plus 2 weeks after the tax disc expired. Or it used to be this way.

If I am correct it gives the OP until mid-July to get a tax disc before the automatic penalty.

Of course, if spotted by a parking attendant or PC at any time with the tax disc expired...

One of my friends used to have tax insurance and MOT all running out together, so he knew when one needed doing he had to do all 3, wouldn't forget one of them, and the plan worked OK for years.

Then his GF decided that to aid their cashflow he should tax it for 6 month once, then go back to yearly so that the cost didn't all fall together.

Outcome was that he forgot to tax it and when, one day in June he noticed the disc said Feb, he got in a panic 'cos it was 4 months out of date. Then he looked closer, and realised that it wasn't Feb that year, it was Feb the year before! (Plank!)

Anyway, he scooted off to the local car tax /vehilce registration place, filled in the form honestly - 'Has the car been used since the tax ran out' - Yes, he was quite happy to pay the back tax but they didn't have a form or a system to cope with that, so just gave him a disc from the beginning of June.

(This was 2? 3? years ago, maybe you wouldn't still get away with it with the new computerised everything)
