Sorry if this has been done before.

Why is it when you are joining a motorway, having found a nice "slot" to slide into, eg perfectly matching the traffic speed of motorway traffic ..does some complete 'stard behind you (on the slip road) think it is cool to overtake you on the chevrons, thus grabbing your intended space?

I've had this happen a few times lately, usually hot hatch driven by sales rep types. Sometimes I just move out as if pretending that I didn't see 'em ! (they really don't seem to appreciate this. Tough) - sometimes they force you to stay on the slip for longer, and seem to laugh at you for your trouble.

Apart from sinking to their level what can you do legally?

Hope they get seen by TrafPol who I know take a very dim view of this. Failing that and staying legal I suspect not much!!

i tend to progress more slowly down the slip road, spot my space and then accelerate along slip road (thus prevent 'stard trying to get the run on me) in to space. seems to work quite well.

Saw this happen in front of me yesterday. I was driving on the A1 Western bypass during rush hour (i.e. pretty slowly and with lots of stops) and I opened up a gap in front of as I approached a slip road with queueing traffic. The 2nd car in the queue dived over the chevrons into the gap, so I slowed a little more to create another gap for the 1st car to get out in front of me.

I also find it frustrating on the motorbike when you find a gap, plan for it and then the guy in the car decides to close the gap because he doesn't want to let you in.

There are some real pratts out there.

I sometimes find that when I'm about to join from a slip road if there is someone behind who from all indications (such as road position and distance between him and me) looks as if he might try something like this I will usually do 1 of a few things depending on other conditions such as traffic.

If the traffic I'm about to join is moving quite slowly then I'll move as far right to the lane as I can reducing the potential offenders window of opportunity. If there is little or no traffic on the road that I'm joining then I'll keep left increasing the potential window as he'll most likely end up passing me anyway so I might as well get it over with.

At other times I will take actions similar to those above either blocking where I feel that an overtake may leave me in an umcomfortable or dangerous position or moving left where it feels it would be safer to do so. However I don't need to do either very often and only on very odd occassions have I felt threatened or pressured by the driver in a car behind me, more often then not I find that drivers are too concerned with finding a slot on the road they're joining to be looking to make a move on cars that will be joining before them.

Just keep in mind that you MUST NOT cross the chevrons if they're bordered by a solid white line, and SHOULD NOT cross them at other times.

(3 points and a fine - not that I ever would ;0) )

Tends not to happen when I'm in the RX-7 - I spot the gap and accelerate into it. In the Jeep I tend to be a bit more forceful if someone tries to 'steal' my space (i.e. force me to stay on the shoulder). I will generally claim the space forcing them to slow.

If there's a significant risk of them causing an accident the I'll just grit my teeth and curse their lack of manners.
