Seeing sense over speed bumps

SPEED HUMPS ARE NOT THE ANSWER
(Wednesday May 14) A BID to improve safety and ease congestion outside schools in Wendover using speed humps has been criticised.
The village has three schools on the same site with a total of about 1,700 children, causing traffic chaos every day.
A Safer Routes To School project costing thousands of pounds is due to start in the summer but parish councillors have dismissed the proposals as irrelevant and a waste of time.
The scheme proposes that speed bumps are put along Wharf Road and Manor Road, while the speed limit is dropped from 30mph to 20mph.
But speaking at last week's parish council meeting, Chris Peeler said: "I'm very critical of these proposals. They don't seem to relate to the Safer Routes to School issue.
"Speed humps do not reduce traffic, they reduce speed, which is not a problem at the time when pupils are coming to and from school."
Cllr Marion Clayton, who is also Bucks County Council's cabinet member for education, agreed to pass on her fellow councillors' comments but said the chances of getting traffic calming would be increased with parish council support.

I used to go to these three schools and traffic has always been bad at the times when the schools leave at 3. They tried staggering the leaving times but mum's who didn't want their kids to walk to the car were getting there an 1 hour early to get a parking space!

Early this morning (no one about) I tried going over speed humps faster than the usual 30 limit and discovered its not as bad on my back, because the extra energy serves to compress the suspension more. So whats the point in them, other than to wreck your suspension?
*disclaimer this was all simulated on a track where there was infact no speed limit at all.

The latest idea by local government is a complete U turn, instead of speed bumps they have found it cheaper to create speed trenches, the speed potholes were the preliminary idea. The trenches are cheaper and save car tax money so that it can be spent to finance more useful things like motorway tolls and toll briges
