M11 SPECS Swapping lanes doesn't fool cameras
Discussion
According to Inspector Matt Johnson swapping lanes makes to difference to SPECS?
This from the Cambridge Evening News
A14 speed cameras go live
HI-TECH new speed cameras on the A14 are about to be switched on - two months later than planned.
The average speed cameras between the M11 and Spittals Interchange will finally go live on Monday.
The controversial scheme was meant to go operational in May, but testing has taken longer than planned.
Now drivers will be filmed at various points along the stretch and digital technology will be used to work out their average speed.
More than 30 cameras have been put along the 14 mile stretch.
Cameras go live on Monday
The Highways Agency and police hope the technology will reduce accidents but critics claim they will make the road more dangerous as people switch lanes to avoid them.
But Inspector Matt Johnson has warned swapping lanes would not fool the system
He said: "The fact remains that speeding is illegal and will not be tolerated by police."

If only they were as keen on other crimes, like shoplifting, burglary, car theft, vandalism. He said: "The fact remains that speeding is illegal and will not be tolerated by police."
This is nothing but political policing.

There'll be more rear-end shunts as everyone drives along staring at their speedo to make sure they're not averaging more than the speed limit, rather than paying attention to what's going on around them. The Highways Agency and police hope the technology will reduce accidents but critics claim they will make the road more dangerous as people switch lanes to avoid them.
SPECS - dumbest idea of evAr.

I am prepared to be told that I'm wrong (which happens often), but it was my impression that the cause of the single lane limitation was not techological, but rather was the way that these devices had been approved for use in Britain.
Correct for the SPECs cameras in general use now. It may well be that this is a new device that has been accredited correctly according to Home Office (or is it the Ministry of the Interior these days), or this could simply be the spreading of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
On a related note, which complete fun-spoiling, idle-handed, green-party-voting, petty-minded son of a camel approved rear-facing SPECs cameras for use on the road leading from the Medway Tunnel back to the A2. Bastids

Strange how you managed to stick to a speed limit on your driving test without crashing but now as a so called experienced driver you think there will be lots of rear end shunts cos people arent looking where theyre going? There'll be more rear-end shunts as everyone drives along staring at their speedo to make sure they're not averaging more than the speed limit, rather than paying attention to what's going on around them.

From speedcam, about Specs fitted in Northampton -
The picture below shows a SPECS pole on the A43 in Northampton during installation. There will be cameras at both ends of the pole which read the number plate of every passing vehicle (bikers don't need to worry as they don't have a front number plate). A similar camera is situated further on up the road which will calculate how long it took for the vehicle to travel between the two cameras. If the vehicle reached the second camera below a preset time a speeding ticket will be on its way to the owner before their journey is complete. These cameras are always in pairs so don't speed up after the first one.
A reliable source tells me the SPECS cameras on the A43 Lumbertubs Way in Northampton are not working! They are functioning, but are not making the sort of returns on their £350K investment that was anticipated. The reason? It has been discovered that since the cameras only cover the outside lane of this dual carriageway, if drivers ensure they are not in the outside lane at the reference points for the cameras, or if they only pass one of the four cameras covering each direction whilst in the outside lane, then the system dumps the captured image of their number plate. The drivers "in the know" are not members of the general public (draw your own conclusions)...
Update - ignore the above as there are now cameras monitoring both lanes. It seems the scamera partnership aren't happy to see potential revenue being lost as drivers were diving into the left lane as they pass each camera. However there are plenty of other SPECS installations in the UK where only one lane of a dual carriageway is being monitored, which is almost certainly the outside lane although you will be able to see which lane the camera is pointing at."
So is the good inspector acting as a propaganda merchant or not ???
And( if not) why did the Specs at Northampton need second cameras ??

What kils me about this whole situation is that it is not speed that is the problem on the A14. It is the A14 itself that is the problem. Specifically that the people who built the main route between a major port and the interior were too dense to build it to motorway specs. All 8 speed cameras that used to be along this stretch were within 100yds of a layby. And that is the cause af the vast majority of accidents along this stretch - some idiot in a lorry lumbering out of a layby at 10mph into rush hour traffic going 60mph. End result, someone piling into the back of the lorry, or sideswiping the car next to them trying to get out of the way.
But rather than fix the problem, they install 8 speed cameras. And when those do the square root of f*@k all, they are going the avergae speed camera route. Thus ruining my off hours commute to work for the next two years! Grrr!

And on the A14 from the M6 -speed cameras either as traffic joins ( circa corby), turns right to get off ( Fox inn'sh) and going north - again circa corby , as traffic joins. Seems to be the same wooley headed, penny pinching accountancythinking both sides of the A1

Correct on both counts, swapping doesn't stop the system determing the speed. It does however stop the evidence being used to prosecute but that's not what he said.He said: "The fact remains that speeding is illegal and will not be tolerated by police."
Speeding is indeed illegal and as we all know is not tolorated by police.
Unless he has changed the type approval it looks like careful PR words decided to deceive the masses.

the dumbest thing about these new cameras, is that on this stretch of the A14, the majority of accidents happen when it is busy and the average speed is below 60mph!!!
I live in the hope that, one day, those in authority wise up to the fact that the vast majority of accidents are caused by stone cold sober drivers, driving below the speed limit, who are not paying attention to what is going on around them.I suspect I'll have a long wait .....
