Hi All, i have just been reading my local paper and there is an article in there stating that there have been no deaths on flintshire county council roads for the past year! Where did these figures come from?

More generally, road death in North Wales has more than halved since the late 1970s (not even the press can turn that into bad news) but recently the fall has been even sharper, to ‘only’ 34 for the year ending on 31st March 2007, compared with 43 for the previous year - a reduction of a stunning 21% year-on-year. Or to put it another way, there are another nine people alive today who might otherwise have been dead. I’m really proud of that.
Great! I'm thinking of writing to him and asking which nine people are alive today who might otherwise be dead. Maybe he can set up a press conference so we can meet the lucky blighters.

Or maybe fatal accident statistics can be fickle and strangely random, and he's had a lucky year?

Who knows?

I just wonder if he will also take the personal responsibility for peoples lives should/when the death statistics INCREASE for a year and wholeheartedly apologise to those peoples families for his hand in their deathsin the same way he takes the plaudits for when the figures suit him!

Edited to add: Maybe a good date in the dairy for Paul Smith to 'remind' Brunstrom about it next year when the statistics change!

Came in the 'nick' of time too - how clever to have 'NO' deaths as stated in paper, when there has been a tiny bit of negativity re our Mr Brunstrom of late - wonder what the figures (or could someone quote percentages) of injuries on the roads for the same period? Hmmmm

Can we carry over non deaths to the next year do you think? Like unused holiday time at work??? So if these 9 people that are still alive today maybe died next year instead it might even itself out?

The absurdity of what I have just said shows how absurd his stats are to begin with. How can anyone prove his statement of there being 9 extra people in the world today thanks to him. Theres probably a few hundred thousand less people thanks to tobacco, fatty foods and alcohol. What if one of his nine people committed suicide? What then? Does that mean brunstoms efforts have been in vein?

Statistics are wonderful things, the percentage drop is only relevant if the number of vehicles who use the roads remains stable.

When calculating LTI's at the work place (Lost Time Injuries) for example, the number of man hours is taken into account, if the for example a factory had 2 million man hours exposure with 1 LTI, the frequency rate would be x, if the following year they had 2 LTI's, the frequency rate would DOUBLE.

So I am wondering if Brunstrom takes this into account, and the answer I come to is NO, whilst the reduction from 43 to 34 sounds like good news, and long may it continue, is it really a reduction if you take into account numbers of road users.

I thought the trend was for vehicle use to go up ?
Is it reducing anywhere?

That's been the overall trend for decades, but, in light of the hostility to drivers that has been shown lately by the People's Republic of North Wales, it would be no surprise if drivers were now steering clear of the place.

Why? I understand bikers are looking elsewhere. Places like the horseshoe pass used to be VERY popular with bikers. Because bikers have lots more accidents than car drivers per head, disuading bikers from Brunstroms patch will have a noteable effect. All its doiing is moving the problem somewhere else.

yes

Just my personal experience but LOADS of my clients (car drivers and bikers) who used to take their mainland holidays in Wales have been going elsewhere the past 5-6 years due to that complete censored s speeding hysterical tantrums. And this is just the small section of people I speak to.

Why go to Wales and risk getting caught doing 78 in a 70 (like I did in 2002, never been back!) when there are much nicer areas of the country with less pedantic speeding laws.

Whatever your views on the sanity of the CoP for North Wales Police Service...you have to admit that a NIL DEATH RATE for a whole year is something for drivers in that area to be proud of and shouldn't be ridiculed.
What it means in real terms is that no-one in or passing through Flintshire in the past 12 months drove so irresponsibly so as to kill anyone....isn't that a good thing?
If only that trend could be emulated by everywhere else.

Population 150,100...Hmmm....can't be that many cars in Flintshire in the first place? (I'm not implying by this that nil deaths is not a good thing)

It's great that there were no fatalities for that period. Of course no one begrudges or ridicules that.

We are deeply sceptical, however, about Brunstrom's claims for credit. We already know that the man has dubious judgment.
Looking at the chart to which he refers, when in the previous year there were three straight months with no fatalities, and then in the next month there was a spike to four fatalities, was he then holding up his hands and blogging, "I am so sorry, but my anti-driving campaign does not seem to be working, and the result was four fatalities."?

I'm sorry but my mental vision of Flintshire conjures up images of rolling tumble weed, single track roads with the odd donkey cart since Brunstrom stamped his personality over the place

Perhaps not many cars IN Flintshire...but quite a lot use the network of roads (including the main A55) that runs THROUGH it.wink

Edit obviously given Apache's idea of the area he has never travelled that route...A55 = miles of dual carriageway....

But we all recognise the guy is ...?passionate?....about the policies on speeding he enforces in his 'domain' so why get all excited when he spouts another ream of propaganda in defence of his policies?
NIL DEATHS is nil deaths whoever announces the figures, just because many think he fell out of the silly tree and hit every branch on his descent & whether it is a consequence of the policies he holds so dear or not...we shouldn't get sidetracked from the fact that on the Flintshire road network no one died....forget the guy and praise the figures.
