I'm sure that laser guns, in private hands, are never really owned, but mearly pass from enthusiast to enthusiast, (or geek to geek depending on how you look at it!). Anyway, the Kustom Pro Laser currently in my posession isn't getting as much exercise as it would like, and I feel it only right therefore to let someone else give it a good home, and to take care of it. It used to belong to Mr Captain-Sideways of this parish, who I believe had fun on track days with it, and still holds the record for a speed reading at over 2000 feet with it. The best I did was a pathetic 1600 feet, BUT I did get a house travelling at over 70MPH thanks to the slip error. Must have been wrong - slip error doesn't exist! ;-).

So, it's time to pass this glorious little toy on, works on 12v cigarete lighter plug, foam lined travel case complete with operating instructions. Fully working exept the audio, which didn't seem to do anything from purchase. Doesn't detract from the unit though in any way, and apart from the odd chip, is fine.

any takers, please Email.........

have fun chaps..........

bit strange really, as I don't want this (at request of moderator) to become an auction. maybe the old 'sealed bids' thing is the way to go, and see what's happened by the weekend.
Just send me an email.

You'd make a lot more money in the long run renting it to people for £25 a week.

Can I go first?

that's a point actually!!

It is quite usefull for testing laser detectors and jammers with. And getting speed readings from low flying helicopters!! especially if you can calculate cosine errors yourself.

The only problem in these cases i.e. in the hands of the public, the chances of erroneous readings are high.

Strict tests on accuracy are needed.

Easy to callibrate. If the speed reading is above the speed limit, it's passed the test - only joking!!

the main test is for accuracy of aim. You can point the gun down a street, put it on 'continuous', then scope around with the circle in the HUD 'head up display) at numberplates of parked cars. All should be a zero speed reading, and the range reading should only appear when pointed at a numberplate. As you move off the plate, the range reading will vanish, then re-appear on the next plate. The range reading should more of less follow your instincts really, ie closer car should be less, further away car more. Obvisouly if you point at a car that;s close and it says 2000 feet something is wrong!. According to the instruction book there are 2 independent timers used for the speed calculation, and both need to (within a certain tollerance) agree with each other. This is part of the self check. Both are run at switch on, then stopped, then read and compared.

YOu can 'feel' when it's reading right. If the speed jumps around, you know it's wrong. In continuous mode you can see the speed changing in the display, which ties in with how you see the vehicle being driven. Interestinglt the LTI2020 doesn't do this, or at least the police don't use it like that which is quite scary.

It does work through glass, and rain, thought not as good and not as reliable. The beam doesn't show up on anything which is odd. CCTV cameras can't see it even though they are infrared, and mobile phones can't see it. The pulses must be extremely short.

Hi, I think I know the gun you refer to, I used this very one to test out my car over a year ago just before he sold it. I will be very interested in buying it from you, where are you in the UK? I am about 30 miles from it's previous home. Will happily meet your reserve

You have to bounce the beam off a retro-reflective surface and put the IR enabled camera right next to the gun; I know cos I've done it with an LTI. You may also have to partially cover the reciever apeture to fool the gun into giving maximum power output.

I mean i've actually pointed a camera straight into the front of the gun. Nothing. If the lights are off and you let your eyes get occustomed to the dark, you can see a very very dim de-focussed red glow.

Not sure what the price of these are these days. Mr Sideways sold it to me for £450, and one had apparently gone on a popular auction site for £600.

To be honest I wanted as much of my money back as pos, but would take 300 as a last resort. Interstingly that's the figure everyone who's contacted me have offered for it.

I guess it must be eye safe then smile

Perhaps the gun aborted the measurement because the camera was interpreted as being a too close target, or the gun wound the power output down due to a large reflection from the nearby camera?

hmm, hadn't thought of that. It does prevent other infrared devices working if you point it at them............... for instance the telly remote control (the reciever bit on the telly)!
