I was stopped by the police for doing 74 in a 40 on the A4. I was caught by a hand held laser.

I was given a producer but no points, I was told that they could not give me points due to my speed and they will take me to court.

yeah it was stupid, no excuse really.

What happens now?

(been driving for 8 years and never had any points)

A friend of mine got done for 79 on a 40 limit dual carriageway at midnight. He had been driving for 10 years, with no previous points.

He got a month ban and £600 fine i think.

Good luck with it.

Where on the A4? A very long road indeed

Police cannot issue points. You either accept a FPT if you are offered one (in this case you were not) or go to court who can annoint you with between 3 and 6 points for an individual offence if you plead or are found guilty.

I expect that you were not offered a FPT because the guidelines for the officer stopping you for the speed recorded state that he has to report you and not give you the option of FPT.

If you have a clean licence, it will help a little. You need to to get some legal help if you want to avert a short period of Shank's Pony

Not necessarily but I think you need to speak to one that specialises in Road Traffic issues.

its 36mph over the limit for instant ban I think - 26-35mph over then court. You may get away with 6 mpoints and big fine if you go and beg nicely with a letter from your employer etc.

I got 6pts a couple of years back for 98 in a 60, should have been banned but need car for work etc.

I had a clean license and got caught doing 129.1 on a dual carridgeway. For my pleasure I got a £200 fine, and a two month ban. I would try to plead for a big(ger) fine and just points in retrospect. Try it and good luck.

You were lucky you weren't thrown in jail. Police must be kicking themselves for letting such a "criminal" get away so lightly.

go for a ban, minimum fine.
Then get a false plate made, after observing similar cars to yours. Do an enquiry pretending to be a wheel clamper, to get the name & address of said vehicle. If ever stopped, give name & address.

Continue to drive.

(c) Criminal manual of driving.

Sick joke? yeah. But loads of people do it - most minicabs for instance.

Good luck.

If it makes you feel any better I had a similar experience a couple of years ago (88 in a 60 limit). I got the producer and that was it. They appear to have forgotten to prosecute me.

Good Luck!

Carl,

I shocked myself when I read your post and thought:

Yes, good idea, already been thinking of doing that.

Sad that it ever gets so bad isn't it.

you shocked yourself?
i thought it was only those G.I.s that were sent for military experiments in the 60's who were still into that sort of thing?
