Stolen BMWs in helicopter chase
Discussion
Three men are in custody after a trio of stolen BMWs led four police helicopters on a 100-mile pursuit.
Two of the aircraft pursued the three BMWs from South Yorkshire into the West Midlands after they were stolen from a vehicle compound in Doncaster.
West Midlands Police said a black BMW 530i sport and a silver BMW 330ci sport convertible were tailed along the southbound carriageway of the M1 by a team from the South Yorkshire force.
At one point during the pursuit, the driver of the convertible abandoned it on the hard shoulder and took over the wheel of the sport model following behind.
It was eventually abandoned in Sutton Coldfield where the driver and passenger fled on foot before they were both arrested.
The driver of the third BMW was arrested following a collision shortly after the theft.
Two other helicopters from the East Midlands and Central Counties air support units were airborne but did not tail the cars, said a West Midlands Police spokesman.
Sergeant David Hewitt from the force's Air Support Unit said: "This was an unusual incident as it involved four police helicopters from separate air support units all co-operating and co-ordinating to bring a potentially dangerous pursuit to a safe and successful end."
