When all our towns are linked by 40mph limits, and the death toll still rises... what next?

They lower the speed limits until full compliance, and the deaths will still be happening, so theyll lower the speed limits again and the deaths will still be happening.
Then there wont BE anyone left to drive on the roads, we'll all have been driven (no pun) out of our cars and onto the buses and trains....gps chips in our arses blipping silent microwave signals back to some self aware supercomputer in Ken "newtboy" Livingstones orifice............
We will be slaves to the Matrix......

Break the speed limits at will and at random, pretty much like I've always done.

Business as ususal I would imagine.

Just thinking.. thats the same as Jersey isn't it? That island has a blanket 40mph top speed limit.

Fun.

Err .. thats because most of the roads are too narrow to do anything more than 40 mph

Ermmm...

Could be wrong but if the national speed limit was 30mph and everyone stuck to it, I am fairly sure that the number of motoring related deaths would be near-zero.

So if reducing the number of fatal accidents is the goal, I'm sure a ridiculous speed limit WILL work...

Not saying they should or that speed is the only factor when it comes to deaths, but I bet it'll work.

Errr no!

When Mr Numpty is driving down a built up street texting his boyfriend, while drinking coffee in his 4X4 he will still wipe out a small group of kids trying to walk to school..........dispite the fact he is doing 30mph.

If the national speed limit was 30, the number of fatal accidents would not drop to nil.

remember that a majority of fatal accidents happen *in 30mph limits already* dont they?

Yeah, but just to clarify I made presumptions that accidents would be *near* nil and only if everyone stuck to the limit.

Anyway, it's a moot point - have to spend more time talking about exploiting loopholes than dwelling on total Plod control.

And I am sure we all pay less attention when driving at 20/30/40 compared to 70/80*/90*.

Now that can't be good for the body count.

*on a private test track, of course.

Agreed. But the problem these days is that most of your concentration has to be taken up by scanning hedges for saftey vans hidden behind

I reckon we're going to end up with 30mph on motorways and 20mph everywhere else. Exemptions will apply e.g. Emergency Vehicles on call and Government oficials (inc their drivers.)

Edinburgh being the test example - all residential roads are going to become 20 and it's expected that the only roads that will be exempt are major trunk roads through the city. (Source ABD)

Yes, but also you can get round the whole island in about an hour even sticking to the limits. That's abit different to trying to do 2, 3 or 4 hundred miles at that speed.

The village where my friend lives has recently become a 20 limit. The reason? some people moaned about cars speeding through, fair enough, many people did speed through.

is it working?

is it heck. people still speed, they are breaking the law by more now.

Does that mean you can now be banned for exceeding the speed limit if you do 40mph in these 20mph areas?

Who will be the first to get a ban for cycling too fast downhill then!
