Was out for a drive last night with the missus and was doing a fair whack along a nice stretch of NSL road. I might have been going a little too quick really :cough: .

Up ahead some little nosh-off in a mini pulls out from being parked on a grass verge, no signalling and he cant have look (or listened its not hard to hear a TVR coming). I had to apply some major braking, it wasnt exactly a near miss I had slowed to his speed with 20-30 meters to spare but I pulled a little closer and gave him a goog blip of the throttle to show my displeasure (better than beeping I reckon smile )

anyhoo, It was really my fault and I have nobody to blame but myself and I was probably a cock to get pissed off with him.

However, as soon as we reach the 30 limit (though a busy village/small town) about a mile down the road, I slow down and he s off at about 60mph!!!! :yikes

I mean there's speeding and speeding where it really isnt safe to do so!! what a complete . limits in built up areas are there for a damn good reason and it does tick me off when people take the piss like that.

Double standards? maybe...

rant over.

I thought I was the only one who sees this happen.
I saw the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago, driving on decent A roads but with few over taking chances stuck behind vehicles doing 28-35mph very frustrating I'd have been happy at the 45/50mph. Hit the 30mph villages and they start pulling away!

I wouldn't have minded but two different drivers did it on the same day.

I treat speed limits as follows:

30 in a 30
40 in a 40
50 in a 50
Anything you fancy in a NSL, according to conditions, visibility etc

I'm pretty sure that Rover 214's just have an 'on' switch - the car then just travels along at 45mph. 60 area, 30 area, whatever, 45 mph!

Same although I bunch the 50's and NSL together as a lot of the local limits have been dropped from NSL to 50 so they get ignored.

This is one of my pet hates.

people who do 45-50mph whether on an NSL or in a 30 or 40 limit.

It seems they have no idea that there are speed limits in towns yikes

Increasingly I'm finding that drivers don't have a clue how quickly they can drive unless there are bloody great signs telling them.

Of course, they then ignore the 30 and 40mph signs as obviously they feel that they're set too low..... but never go over 45mph in the NSLs.

Bloody odd.

Thats why the last ones were called rover 45's... cos they can only be driven at 45mph... nothing more nothing less

Its because 30MPH limits tend to be straight roads, good visibility, streetlights, wide etc etc - these Knob Jockeys feel "safer" driving faster!

I've lost count of the number of people i've overtaken doing 30mph in an NSL only for them to push me all the way through the 30's!

Agreed, though with some exceptions. I treat clearly arbitrary limits with disdain. For example the Batheaston Bypass at the bottom of the A46 around the Eastern edge of Bath. This brand new dual carriageway was opened about 10 years ago. at either end the road is a winding single carriageway with NSL limits. The new dualled section has a 50mph limit and two speed cameras rolleyes. There's another stretch near the village where my mother lives that used to be NSL but has been changed to 30mph for no apparent reason. The road is wide, vision good, there are no side turnings and no houses (or any other buildigns come to think of it). Sorry, but that is worthy of contempt.

yes someone needs to mention hazard perception to them, Im no expert but on an NSL in the country hazards are limited compared to dirving through a town with a junction every few seconds, traffic lights, islands, pedestrians etc etc etc etc.

Funnily enough, the 43mph cruise control brigade are a stroppy bunch. When I go out for a scenic drive I invariably feel compelled to put an overtake in on the NSL, good speed through the nice windy sections, and they disappear in the mirror. However, about halfway through the next village (30mph) they are right up my backside! And repeat, ad nauseam....

Or should you dare overtake them, you're clearly an idiot smile

I stick to 20s, 30s, 40s and usually 50s. and I regularly find that the following happens.

I come up behind someone doing 45 in a national limit. I overtake said person. I reach a 30 limit and slow down to 30. They tailgate me through the 30 and then overtake me at as I'm approaching the switch back up to national speed limit (I'm still doing 30). I overtake them again 100m into the national speed limit where they're doing 45 again.

I have no problem with people doing 45 in national speed limits - people shouldn't drive faster than they feel safe - but why they feel the need to overtake me right at the end of the 30 limit, knowing that I'll be driving far faster than them in a few hundred meters time, I'll never know.

Idiots.

They do it because it's 'familiar' to them (whether their town or not, towns LOOK the same...), therefore they feel safe (they've no actual appreciation of hazard levels, clearly).

Country roads are unknown to them, largely, so they drive cautiously.

If I overtake in an NSL with plenty of room, often not having to exceed the limit to do so, and I get flashed or abused, I have been known to stop the car in question and ask them what they would do if I did 20mph in a 30 zone, effectively 2/3 of the limit as they seem happy to do in an NSL.

Yep. A type of pit lane speed limiter.

It really really really p****es me off when I drive behind them throughout all the NSL lanes, then they bugger off up the road when we hit a 30mph village.
