Italian Speeding Fine - 14 months later!!

Just arrived by recorded delivery from the Italian Consolt in London (posted 16.7.2007).
Apparently on 26.5.2006 I exceeded a 50kmh limit by 14kmh - fine E143 + E13 (costs) - in a hire car.
This then doubles to E286 if unpaid within 60 days of the notification of the violation.
There's information on how to pay through Italian banks/post offices.
14 months later it's pretty hard to contest this -I'm not even sure who was driving - there's no photographic evidence - will they try to recover the fine through my credit card details from the hire company?
Any experience/advice appreciated.

Find someone who knows Italian law, see if any 'statute of limitations' applies here (like the UK 14-day NIP rule).Apparently on 26.5.2006 I exceeded a 50kmh limit by 14kmh - fine E143 + E13 (costs) - in a hire car.

Alternatively, just don't go back to Italy...ever!

Ask them to prove it is the correct car - (no photographic evidence therefore it could be any car) and who was driving.Apparently on 26.5.2006 I exceeded a 50kmh limit by 14kmh - fine E143 + E13 (costs) - in a hire car.
