Once again boys in blue I would appreciate your advice.
My daughter has announced at the weekend that she is seriously considering joining the force.
She is a mature student graduate with a degree in IT and programming; she is 27 and moved to Preston recently on the understanding that she would be carrying out a post grad year at the university there. They have in true British style announced at the last minute that the course is cancelled due to low numbers, so she is left out on a limb.
She is interested in the detection of computer crime and all other related issues such as industrial espionage, web fraud and the common and escalating abuse of children using computers.
She is VERY capable and streetwise but I am assuming that if she joins it would be to the GMP, and the idea of her marching round Manchester on a Saturday night fills me with dread. Having said that it doesn't bother her in the slightest!!
She is absolutely terrific with people and has a way about her that puts even a snarling dog at ease!
I would appreciate your input on just how dangerous you consider this to be, and what advice you would offer her as to what career she should pursue within the force using her qualifications.

PM me and i'll hunt for an e-copy which i hope i still have!!

Everyone starts from the same position. She could go for accelerated promotion programmes which push you through ranks however she would be best to join and go with the flow. Most police forces teach in a university style (so she should find it easy). The job is probably not that dangerous although she will be assaulted at least once a year (if on response) probably more. Chance of being killed/seriously injured is more likely to be on the way to or from work.My daughter has announced at the weekend that she is seriously considering joining the force.

Once in if she moves towards child protection that will be linked to internet porn. She could however consider SOCA. That may be a more investigative postion.
I would advise her to look at other investigative posts like SOCA, MI5, GCHQ etcetera, or a civilian specialist role in the police. Her specialist talents will be entirely lost if she joins as a PC. Could just as easily do 30yrs without that particular role coming up, and it's never guaranteed that selection for jobs is by merit/past experience rather than writing skills!

The mention I made about her ability to put strangers at ease is to me an important asset if you are out in the street in a sticky situation, so from that point of view I have no misgivings.
Can you tell me more about SOCA?
I think Mad Doc posted up something or other about this course either in P&P on here or on Paul's Chatty Chat forum. Lancs Uni in Preston offer three courses - a post grad "appreciation of police basics" year on police stuff, a two year und the other a proper degree aimed those who intend to join police or any job within police
Per the PR blurb (do googly search on "Manchester/thisislancashire sites" - they heavily subscribed - but they just introduce the longer full degree course which does include computer/other fraud detection as part of core course per the blurb we read in local papers when PR machine kicked off.
Could be this attract more - which make the one year less "popular"
I think nothing to stop your daughter applying directly to join up police anyway Liebchen. I think once through the initial probation - opportnunities/further career move come up to use all acquired talent to potential
(That per the BiB relatives we have.)
Forgot to add that I think I also read in the local PR pieces that the afore-mentioned courses are sponsored/content advised by Lancashire and GMP Forces.

Agreed - these computer type roles are usually civilian posts within the service. Most jobs now, that dont need the powers of a police officer, are either already civilianised or are about to be.
