road legal requirements

Hi,
I am new to this site/forum so hello all and please forgive me for making the typical newbie error of not looking far enough through past post to see if this has been covered before!
I am looking for the legal requirements/specifications for road vehicles. I am thinking of improving my welding/mechanical skills before tackling a classic resto. so thought I'd build a custom vehicle to amuse myself and give my mates somethign to laugh at. Am thinking of something like the mini-based road legal sofa's/beds etc. that abound or even something like the trike on ebay at the mo that uses the back half of a jag xjs. all harmless fun.
could anyone point me towards somewhere I can download/buy a copy of the relevant regs and MOT requirements?

My biological clock is fast approaching midnight and I don't have time to go through it all but two suggestions:
(1) Have a browse through http://www.tinyurl.com/38ojga
which is the Norton Iron Con and Use Regs which mirror
those of GB and will give some information.
(2) There is also a dearth of matter in Type Approval etc
and your best bet here and all round is to speask to VOSA

Why cannot you just buy a Porsche (mobile sardine tin) and have done with it?
